how to get a funky kick

I'm wondering how to achieve a kick sound like in Herbie Hancock's palm grease.
Does anybody know? what kind of kick? front head on? Would 1 mic be sufficient?

Fairly tight on the batter, looser on the front head. No port hole, with one mic (an RE-20 would work best) about 2 inches in front of the front head, on a 45-degree angle to the head in direct center.

I tried that, but I got too much of a 'thumpy' sound, with not too much attack or click.
not sure if I understand your last sentence. Should the mic be placed in the center, pointing 45 degrees away, or should it be place off center, pointing towards the center?

Try no front head, lots of muffling and the mic right on the beater from the inside 2 to 6 inches away. Does'nt sound real deep so I would try an all around mic like an sm57. Probably an 18 or 20 inch kick but a 22 would work just fine.

14 x 22" bass drum.
Ambassador batter. Pillow or similar damping.
Ported front head or no front head (the recording sounds ported to me).
Mics and mic positions to taste - probably usual suspects; RE20, D12, 421.
Try a 47 style mic outside facing the front head (for extra oomph).
