If I was buying Ludwig, it wouldn't be the stainless steel ones.
The basic older kits sound fantastic.

yeah, it's not like the ss kits are "instant bonham" or anything. They actually don't sound too good. The only reason they sort of worked back in the day was that most folks were using pinstripes or other pretty dead heads on them with pillows stuffed in the kicks. Otherwise...think timbales but bigger.

I do love my older luddys though. I just got two new kits....one 3 ply in the natural maple exterior and a set of the blue mist standards (looks turquoise) and they're both killer. The natural set gives my gretsch rb kit a run for the money in the studio.

Neither tops my 6 ply in natural maple finish for live, loud, rock and roll shows.

Looks count for zip in music.
Now I admit looks can be important for stage, hence the band KISS.

I would simply poiint to the "placebo" effect for the impact that these things can have...as Shakespeare once so eloquently said "Things are neither good nor bad...it is your thinking that makes them so"

If you lust after them...you will probably play better...your drumming Feng Shui is in complete alignment. That surely counts for something...

Peace

I admit, I say I got my Ludwig's to add value to my studio services, but really I just like to look at them.
