tom gates

what's the easiest way to squash out resonant ringing on my tom tracks without killing the tone of the toms when they're actually being used?? I'm mixing itb with sonar 7.
Thanks!

As far as I know strip silence is only for PT, no? How would I do that in Sonar?

Sorry, momentary lapse of sanity. Remove silence (duh) is the sonar term (and I've used it before so that makes me even crazier).

What would you guys suggest in a less destructive manner? Would a simple gate serve my purpose?

That's not an option as the drums have already been recorded. I'm not interested in reducing the resonance of the drum while played, only the sympathetic resonance of the other drums around.

If you use the audio cutting and fading option previously detailed carefully you shouldn't notice the rest of the drums cutting in and out.
Also, you can auto ride the tom mics in your DAW, just lowering them a bit when the toms aren't playing.
Tom ring can be alarming, but it often blends into the overall sound of the kit once the rest of the music is introduced. Unless the drummer played his toms very lightly, leading to the tom mics having to be turned up very loud.
I've gone both ways - either lowering or editing the tom channels between hits, or just letting the ring continue.
The former often leads to a very tight drum sound, which isn't always what you want.
Leaving the tom channels alone sometimes leads to a bigger overall drum sound.
