Percussion kit: advice needed, please

Hi

I am looking into buying a percussion kit for recording a demo at home.

Something classic, orchestral, not "latin" or "exotic". The kind of sounds that would fit into the Beach Boys´"Pet Sounds", for example.

Which items should I buy? I guess a tambourine, maracas, egg shakers, bongos, a block, claves, a triangle, a xylophone/metalophone/glock... Any recommendation about specific kinds, brands, sizes?

I know nothing about percussion. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Victor

If you buy reasonable quality it's going to be an expensive shopping list for a demo.
Bongos and tuned percussion (Marimba/Xylophone) especially.
The other stuff you've listed is reasonably priced and will come in useful - tambourine, shakers, maracas, castagnets, wood block, claves, triangle.
You could look at orchestral percussion sample sets.
Play some real stuff and augment it with samples for the expensive stuff.
There are some nice libraries out there, especially for tuned percussion.

Don't forget the tympani. You'll need a set of at least three.

LP and Remo world stuff should be good enough for your purposes. you'd be better off using samples of glock and xylophone. a good concert glock will run over 1000. you could always check into renting some from someone in your area. and in that case, maybe offer pizza and beer to a local college student to play it for you (the mallet stuff that is).

@ drumzealot: Cool, I´ll keep that in mind.

@ j2dafo: Your advice sounds very reasonable. I´ll look into LP and Remo. Cheers!

I always used four. Root, fourth, fifth, octave.

And you have to get a glockenspiel. You just can't play Born to Run or I Will Follow without a glockenspiel.
