Is Meg White using drum triggers

Okay so I am a huge White Stripes fan and as a drummer believe it or not, I do like Meg White also. However I've always been stumped as to why she has triggers on her drums....see picture below. Do you guys think she is actually triggering a sound, or can they be used for other things? Its a little contradicting to their whole Aesthetic IMO

yes she is!

Yes she is! All her drumsounds are just (good) samples. I know this for 99% sure, because I asked one of the members of the German Agency wich was responsible for one of the first tours of The White Stripes in Europe....

And I think the picture is obvious too... Ddrum!

That explains also why it looks like she is not hitting her drums very hard, but stil has a massive (very compressed) sound. I think it fits the music though, but not the band's "old-scool-image"....

greetz,

Yeah, I saw a bootleg from Canadian TV (I think it was Canadian) and as I recall they didn't even mic the drums, just had a couple overheads on the cymbals. Incidentally, the video was incredible.

It's important to note that while they are pretty old school, as I recall Jack White does use the whammy pedal and POG, which are both modern digital pedals.

They aren't scared of technology.

All good points. I was wondering how her drums sounded so good when I saw them right and she was barely hitting them. Oh well, I still love them and whatever samples they are triggering sound freakin' awesome.

Is jack white using AUTO TUNE?

It has always occurred to me that the vocals in "Pretty good Lookin' (for a girl) sound odd. I did not realize it until one day i was listening to the "trendy american remix" available only on a 7 inch single. This "Remix" is simply the same mix, but with an extreme setting on antonio bandares' Auto-tune on the vocal. now that i hear the album version it, it is hard to discern one from the other. anybody else notice/ have any thoughts? listen closely to the high notes in both versions. this was early white stripes from around 2001/2002.

Send a message via AIM to soundsundergroun
It's probably not happening, but you can use triggers to control your gates.

In live situations and with touring, making sure the drums are tuned and in good condition for a show can be a bit cost/time prohibitive. Triggers make setting up a live mix a lot faster too.

Plenty of drummers are using triggers live when they wouldn't touch them in the studio for those reasons.

I was planning on doing this for my next band. Live drums are so annoying in small Boston clubs and they never sound how I want them to... if the White Stripes are using triggers then I'm certainly going to try and incorporate that into my live sounds because they sound AWESOME live.

Why?

She is still playing, just with samples mixed in.

Still some good tunes in there.

i'm sure the white stripes and their crew have enough time to tune the drums and sound check...

i say go with whatever sounds good. there are no rules. they're a great band.

My sister is a drummer and everyone compares her to Meg White . Well she took lessons for a few years and practiced ALOT so she could play drums good and hit them hard consistent , sound like a solid drummer , not be another crappy girl drummer who can't hit hard .

Meg White has been playing a long time and if she respected playing the drums and wanted to get better she could have but shes a lazy ass loser and girl drummers look up to her to sound like her but shes just a big phony and in reality another crappy girl drummer . Whereas my sister is a real drummer and could represent on any drum set any time and smack the hell out of the drums .

And I bet you anything Jack White tells her exactly what to play . So what does she really contribute to girl drummers ......NOTHING .

I don't care what anyone says. Put anyone else behind the kit and The White Stripes are simply not The White Stripes. Put on some headphones and drum along to their stuff trying to incorporate the dynamics she does. Of course it isn't difficult, but it is obvious that thought goes into it and that it is PERFECT for their music. I wish more drummers would worry less about flexing their chops ( and ruining songs in the process ) and more on playing for the song and just sounding good.

okay...so i'm a huge Ringo Starr fan...sue me.

The band was good about 10 years ago guys.

Now they are a big joke. Id say that to Jack or Megs face, because even they know it. But if the ship isnt sinking, keep sailing it!

They were never a great band. They were a good, fun live band that had a cool scene. That time has long passed and that scene is long gone.

I know many many bands from NYC that were or are much more talented, dedicated, and ambitious than the Jack and Meg ever were. The White Stripes were in the right place at the right time, and hey, good for them.
