Drum Gods of 2009?

So...there was a thread started out in the main forum about new guitar "gods" of 2009 and although it started some petty bickering (as any opinion oriented thread will...) I definitely found some great new folks and it was quite an interesting discussion.

Figured I'd pose the question about new drummers out there that are doing great things combining excellent songwriting/playing ability/taste/tone etc...

Excluding the clinician guys (Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman, etc....) and not including guys that have not been doing the same thing for 30+ years (Neil Peart, Terry Bozzio, etc...) who are the new guys that are combining all the elements listed above (songwriting/playing ability/taste/tone) you're listening to.

My newer favs are:

Joe Russo
YouTube - Benevento Russo Duo: "My Pet Goat"

Jeff Ballard
YouTube - Brad Mehldau Trio - Knives Out

Glen Kotche
YouTube - Wilco - Walken - TV Show 2007

David King
YouTube - The Bad Plus - The Making Of For All I Care

Matt Chamberlain (not necessarily new....but doing newer things lately)
YouTube - Marco Benevento: Live at Tonic- "Nobody Does It Better"

I'm sure I can think of more....but that'll do for now.

Your turn!

Well, I'm just starting drumming after playing guitar for 16 years.

I've decided that my drumming will be everything that my guitar playing was not i.e. tasteful, groove-oriented and solid....

So instead of drooling over the uber chops guys, I'm appointing Abe Laboriel Jr. as my official favourite.

So there.

Jim

I'm a huge fan of Danny Carey of Tool (new? well - 90's and newer I guess) - the guy plays like a percussion section unto himself.

Also, love Jojo Mayer - I think he deserves to be separated from the 'clinician' types because of his work with Nerve and Screaming Headless Torsos.. live drum n' bass is hard to pull off - but they do it.

You probably have to throw Joey Jordison in there, whether you like his style or not.. the guy is the player that all the kiddies want to be these days. Frankly, I DO like his playing - for the music he does, he kills it.

Jojo does some amazing stuff...and I'd include him in this category (as I would Johhny Rabb) just for their work in the drum n' bass field.

I almost included Joey in my list as well....I've had to teach some of his stuff, and although metal isn't really my thing he's very unique in his writing, and has some serious chops.

I thought my prog rock listening days were behind me until I stumbled onto Porcupine Tree. Steve Wilson writes great songs and the band has a great sound. Drummer Gavin Harrison not only has great chops but has a tremendous feel. He's my current fave for rock. PT's first drummer Chris Maitland is also quite good.
