Thread Starter | SM58 on kick...
Tomorrow two of my bands will be doing some recording at the practice space. The best mic I have available for kick will be a spare SM58. Any tips on coaxing a decent sound out of it in a kick drum?

Throw it in and check it out. It will not sound like a god kick mic but should be useabel with some EQing. I recorded rehearsal sessions with just one SM58 in front of the drumset and it is very doable and does sound better than you might think. Question is what else you have on the drumset? Anyway I would sugest to place it directly at the kickresos port inline with the reso and faceing straight to the batter side). (aka mic axis 90° to reso)

| 58 on kick...
...I have used a Beta 58 on kick with good results. A dynamic with high SPL capabilities is never a bad choice. I inserted the 58 into a port on the reso head and pointed it directly at the beater (contact spot) with the entire body of the mic inside the kick.

I've used the 57 on kick (basically the same mic). Not all that bad. Just like real estate: Location, location, location.

| I allready told you my favorit one, but realy it depends on the drums, head choise, tuning, drummer, ... find the spot. You'll never get a good drumsound fallowing advices from idiots posting at internet forums. You got to move the damn mic and listen your self! I know the sweet spot on drumsets were a single mic will sound great and balanced, but I found it my self. Stop hanging around in forums and start recording and moving mics! |
