Thread Starter | Ride rivets 1M$ question!
I am studying drums, I would love to play jazz (or something near) sometime in the future... ![]() I would like to have a ride with rivets. I understand that rivets are used to make the cymbal sound longer. So you better start with a long sounding ride and add rivets to it, not with a dry one??? ![]() Any story/idea/philosophy you may have about rivets and rides I would love to hear... ![]() |

the old school jazz thing was to get a riveted cymbal and take out all the rivets but one just a little sizzle I did this to my riveted cymbal once and it made it a lot more versatile for everyday and a lot less like a 'special effect' there are devices you can attach to the top of the cymbal stand and drape over the cymbal to give you something similar to a rivet sound, but with no holes drilled into your cymbal nice because you can quickly move it to try it on different cymbals I have also seen people just drape a small chain

Excellent answer. If I may add couple of things: It may also depend on the size of the band, and the size of the room. Ride cymbal is the time genetaring element in mainstream jazz, If you are playing a piano trio, you probably wouldn't want all that wash and sizzle but a five horn band may just need that glueing effect. Any cymbal can be used with rivets. A dark sounding one with medium decay should be the most suitable for my taste. |

Thanks! Yes, the little chain is easier to "experiment" with (how long, which material, etc.) but the rivet is probably more authentic. I will have to very sure about it before I start to make holes!!! ;-DDD |

try linking some paperclips together and wrap one end around the post under the felts....a bit quieter than the chains, but it's got a nice subtle effect.

I have to try the non-intrussive possibilities!

another idea... using duct tape, tape the edge of a penny to cymbal so it can flap around when you hit it. I picked that up from a drummer I really admired. |

| the simplest chain is done using the classich o-o-o-o-o metal chain that holds the rubber sink plugs. it's cons is that it will fall straight down toward you and you may be hitting it while riding your ride producing some funny sounds also it will not actually sound like rivets but it's good to experiment consider than drilling (properly) a few holes (up to 6 or so) in a ride will not much alter the sound should you decide to take the rivets off. peace! |

I have an old Zildjian flat top ride that sounds amazing with the 'Rattler' attached.
