Snare like a Black Beauty, but cheap

I love the sound of the Black Beauty - if I could afford one for the studio, I'd get one, but I cannot justify it.

Have I got any options to get me in the same ball park for £150 secondhand?

I know you can't beat the real thing (excuse the pun), I know but...

The next best thing would probably be the worldmax Black Dawg/Black Hawg and the other drums using those same shells (Ludwig Black Magic, PDP Ace, etc, etc)

You can pick those up pretty cheap and they sound great.. not exactly a BB, but still a heck of a good drum.

Yeah, the black dawg's ok.all the copies pretty much use the world max shell.
the shell is a bit lighter and the bead is a bit smaller..
its not quite as "meaty" sounding as the original but usable nontheless.

I upgraded a Pork Pie Big Black with diecast hoops and better heads of course and I'm quite happy with it. Not the exact clone but it works well for $200 new.

Unfortunately, I've been trying to get the Black Beauty sound cheap, but have had no luck in 15 years........ nothing comes close in my estimation.

I hear the Pearl Steve Ferrone's are super close and you can get a used one for a decent price.

The Pork Pie BB clone is an exceptionally good recording drum. Excellent value. I'd have a hard time distinguishing one from a contemporary BB in a rock mix.
