MIDI Quest: External Drum module into Kurzweil PC2x

Hi,

I want to use an external electronic drum brain midi out and then into the Kurzweil PC2X midi in. I want to play the external drum brain to trigger the PC2X sounds.

I am getting the idea that this process is pretty generic - as far as programming the midi channels etc.

But I am a complete novice. So -- do I have to midi-program both units to communicate with each other? Or (because of GM midi rules) do you just go midi out of drum brain - midi in to the PC2X and the PC2X autonmatically assigns the midi signals to its drum sounds?

Help me out please?

Thanks,

Woods

I defy anyone to do a google and find anything directly relating to what it is I am trying to do

All I want is something talking in general terms about this particular thing -- trying to match up midi channel info. So that a drum module can trigger the slave's drum sounds.

Nobody here has described it yet. Yeah you've touched on it in your own way but in the typical way that people who already know how to get somewhere describe directions to the lost. Most of the time there are lots of shortcuts implied that the lost guy knows nothing about.

Could you pleae try to outline the principles behind my partricular pursuit?

Thanks again,

Woods

People aren't answering because that's fairly simple and you should have been able to quickly figure it out by spending a few minutes with the owners manuals. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, however, here's how you do it (in the hardware world, no computer or software routing assumed):

1 - Connect midi out of drum brain to midi in on PC2x.

2 - On your drum brain, figure out which midi channel you're transmitting on. To keep things simple, it's probably best set the midi transmit of the drum brain to midi channel 1.

3 - When you turn on the PC2x, it will default to midi channel 1 being the active channel. Select the drum sound on your PC2x that you wish to play.

4A - If the drum brain was set to transmit midi information on a different channel, say channel 10 (which is often used for drums), then you need to assign midi channel 10 on the PC2x to the drum preset you wish to use.

4B - Press Midi Receive, then the << and >> buttons to get to the channel you need to use (say 10 for this). If the display shows that it's off, turn it on. Also, you can select the preset / program you want from here.

5 - Go to your drum brain and start drumming.

Good luck.

Thanks very much guys.

I read the OSP manual pg 11, 12. But I'm such a midi idiot that it ain't stickin' yet. I'm gettin there though.

Since I turned 39 reading manuals and understanding completely new stuff seems to take longer and longer

Thanks for your help. I'll Get back to the reading and see how she goes.

here's the manual to the module:
http://www.ospworldwide.com/dd502_manual.pdf

It's only 19 pages. The midi codes are near the back.

Does it look like it can be used to trigger the PC2X drum sounds?

thanks,

Yep, default channel 10.

Just make sure you have the PC2x set to receive on channel 10 (or even all), select a preset that you want to use and you should be good to go.

Oh, also, you may have to mute the drum brain or turn it strictly to midi mode so you don't hear any of its onboard sounds.
