Zildjian A Custom Cymbal 4 Pack

Zildjian A Custom Cymbal 4 Pack:

14" A Custom Hi Hats

16" A Custom Crash

20" A Custom Medium Ride

Anything wrong with buying these as a pack? I like the sound of Zildjian K and A Customs. So the sound is not really my concern, but more the merits of buying a pack as opposed to individual pieces (duds?). These would be for my studio kit.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

Thanks.

There's really nothing wrong with buying those cymbals as a pack, if you're getting a price break and if you like the sound of the cymbals. Personally, you might be better off spending a little extra and just custom-selecting a set of the best sounding (in your opinion) cymbals at the store.

I decided to build up my collection slowly, piece by piece. Thanks again chrisso and BLUElightCory for the advice.

+1 that's how I do it, but I always bring in some of my cymbals to make sure they sound right together. That said, occasionally there are cymbals that don't match up with anything I have but sound great in their own right. Keep your ears open and your wallet fat.

I purchased an a custom set with 20 medium ride 16 crash and 14 hi hats it came with a free 18 crash and a free cymbal bag through mail rebate. Everything worked great the bag came in the mail after 4 or 5 weeks and the cymbals sound great. I dont play live i mostly record on what i produce and mix and they sound beautifull miced the ride has good definition with just the right amount of wash the 16 cuts great in the mix and the 18 is a great all around cymbal (its my main crash) the hi hats sound great too but I wish they had a tighter closed sound they sound to my ears as if theyre not cosed tight but that might be a matter of taste. I also bought from a friend a slightly used set of z customs with a 18, 16 and 12 all medium in weight. I dont like em as much as the a customs but still give me more color choices when recording. beware the a customs are on the brighter side of the spectrum. if u play rock or pop they are great but if you play jazz or other traditional style u might be better off with som k's but more on the ride and hi hats. What i did was i purchased a pair of 14 inch k/kspecial dry combination hats for 200.00 on sale (cant beat that deal) its a k on top and a custom special dry k bottom for when i want a darker more cutting "chick" sound from the hats and im in the process of getting a 22 medium dark ride (cindy blackman ride) and ill be set until i get my set of constantinoples

Hope this helps somewhat. good luck!!

I want to add since this is a gear/recording forum that i track them with a pair of earthworks in omni for overheads and the hats with an akg 451 through manley pre amps. It works great.

Individual vs. Pack

Your soul will be more at peace with choosing each individually by hand. Your wallet might be a bit more at peace if you bought a pack. Which is more important? Saving money or having a sound palette that matches your exact requirements (brighter, quicker decay, drier, pingy bell, no bell, etc.)...

I don't mean to spend your money...but I say go with feeding the soul (and hand selecting).
