Well, I guess this is my first "what should I get" thread. I'm tracking an alternative band, kind of post-hardcore (not quite emo) type of thing. Warped-tourish. The drummer has big acrylic kick drum, and I was thinking of getting a different kick mic. I currently use a Sennheiser e902, and I was thinking of getting an Audix D6 for this type of music. It's the first time I've done such contemporary rock, so I would love some recommendations.... thanks!

There are several threads on this topic - you might do a search for "kick mic" and I think you will find much (search the So much gear so little time and High end boards as well as here).

I appreciate the suggestion. I completely understand that there is plenty of information available, and I have spent plenty of time reading threads about this mic and that mic, and I pretty much never ask for advice about which gear to use where. I was hoping that someone might have a positive experience with the specifics of my situation that could lend a first hand recommendation.... and specifically people that are more in tune with various types of kick drums rather than various mics. Thanks, though, I might be inclined to tell someone the same thing if it appeared they were passing up obvious resources.

Oh man, I've read some threads that acrylic drums can be tough.... the kid just got them as an endorsement deal and he's totally in love with them. Honestly, for their style of music they're great but I'm not looking forward to trying to record them. It'll be a learning experience for sure!

IF well damped, the acrylic kick will sound great... D6 + condenser will do it |

Cool man, thanks.... that's what I'm going to try, a D6 and an ST77 outside the kick. I think that'll help. I have some foam I can cut to fit the length of his kick and tone it down some.

sounds perfect. i love a roomy sounding kick for music like this. the whole subbass+click modern rock kick drum sound always sound out of place.
