I'm a drummer! - what' would you do?

Welcome to another episode of 'WHAT WOULD GEAR SLUTZ DO' - I need some direction in the upgrading of my project studio & post here because it will mostly be a drum room.

WHAT I HAVE NOW:
M-Audio FW1814

WHAT I WILL BUY:
M-Audio Profire 2626 or an M-Audio OCTANE preamp to support my new mic purchases(Blue, Violet etc)

MY QUESTION:
Does it make a difference if I have the OCTANE preamp inside the box or not? I'm thinking the cables could cause signal loss & potential probs. What would you do?

The octane preamps are hot garbage. Not enough headroom for doing drums. Save up and buy a preamp that won't suck nearly as much.

FYI, the cable has less to do with the signal as much as the source, preamp, mic or recorder.

Hot garbage? - Wow thanks! all I have heard about the Octane pre's must have been malted vomit.

What pre would you reccomend for drums? Something around that price point.

I had the Octane for a minute, while my dog's ass definitely does not smell better, the pre-amps are nothing to write home about (sorry, just trying to one-up the vomit comment)
I also have the FW1814 and got that hot-rodded by Black Lion so the converters are also more usable. But I totally get the price point thing, so i understand your dilemma. For the kind of money you would have to put into an octane I would think a small board might be a better value, maybe a Mackie. Perhaps ditching the 1814 and going for an Onyx 16 channel with firewire would be a good way to go, probably a little more money, but A LOT more value in the long run. Seriously, I think the conversion on the FW 1814 is crap, the Octane doesn't give you a whole lot more either.
How many channels were you shooting for? More than 8? Maybe just getting into 8 good channels of pre-amps with the 1814 is the place to start (again a small board like the Mackie VLZ could be good for this) and then worry about your converters later.
Good luck!

Yeah more funny comments!

Well I need at least 8 microphone inputs for my drum recordings. I have been thinking about the ONYX series, but the fact that it does not work as a control surface bugs me, for that money I could buy a 003 rack and add some pre's. ONYX pre's sound better for drums, but the 003 has the software.

Right now I have a FIRESTUDIO that I am about to return. The thing is just a system hog and will not let me direct monitor, so I must get something else. Also, I don't like the software console. Nice, but a hassle to navigate.

So what do I want? Well 8 microphone inputs that I can record all at once that have decent pre's and a GOOD software console. When I say good, I mean programmed well and not too much of a system hog, easy to navigate etc..

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
