A really crazy setup?? (with pics)

Hi guys!...A friend of mine sent me these pics from Useless id's last recordings (A punk-rock band)...Does any one have any idea why the record with Speakers in front of the drums?!!

That's strange indeed
Some people like to use speakers on the Kick to increase the sub of the BD.

Maybe monitoring for when they're warming up and when they record they use headphones?

you can if you connect the speaker to a preamp you can use it as a microphone

sometimes this is good for capturing lower frequencies

yeah...I can see the one in front of the kick being used for a sub kick but I don't get the other one off to the side.

It just thickens up the kit alot. If I do, I put a speaker behind the drummer. You solo that track up and all of a sudden it sounds like it slowed down. It works well with metal(the genre) drums because with all those notes the drums don't resonate so well so you can have the attack they like and the body and density that everybody likes....

I wondered at first too, but it looks like the one to the side is a different size and it looks as if its unplugged, they were likely trying out two different speakers for the application.
If you wire the speaker to an xlr you can get some really thumping lowend, pretty much what the Yamaha Subkick capitalized on. Sounds really wicked.
