Thread Starter | Spaced Pair vs. Close Mic Overheads
Hi guys, I've always used a spaced pair trying to get the ambience of the kit but then, if I've triggered anything, it's tricky to rule out the raw sounds (even with a 1KHz high pass) especially when trying to realign or quantize. Anyone got experience with close micing cymbals? Got any recommendations of mic use/placement etc.? Could you use a room mic to make up for the proxmity? Cheers, Dan Goudie |

Get a better drummer? Or, record cymbals separate from drums? |

I just tried close micing the cymbals on the suggestion of Joe Ferla on one of these threads. It was actually perfect for this track since there were lots of ride cymbal in it. Joe's idea is to close mic the cymbals and use a mono overheard. You certainly get more presence .
