Trujillo seems to be the only ripper in the bunch of them, I guess they bought him into the band with their offer of a fat million!

It sounds like Lars on the fast track to the land of hasbeens. And let's not get nostalgic about old metalheads, please!
...hey, let me be clear...I stood up for Lars cuz a lot of opinions started going down the "he was always overrated" and "he gets paid the big bucks for that?" road. I steadfastly admit his chops are less than stellar in these clips and when you play in a band that made it's name on fast, aggressive riffs executed with fierce precision...it makes for a rough ride. Its hard to reinvent yourself when you are metal...you cant hardly go "unplugged" when you get older and do jazz stuff...you cant became the very thing that you loathed when you were young...or you lose credibility. Then you try to rock...and you are a "has been". He is in a no win situation...

I will say this in closing...Metallica was as influential on the last evolution of hard rock as Sabbath and Zeppelin were in the first. Lars, although not the greatest technician, held his own and supported the songs well (and he was rather understated for a speed metal / hard rock drummer). If you are going to give him a beat down for letting his chops slide and living the life of a rock star...ok...fair enough. However, his middle aged slide doesnt erase all the ground breaking things he did...and I would suggest that many of us would do the same thing Lars is doing (enjoying his life and focusing less on drumming).

Wow..... Heavy I usually agree with you but not on this. There were several drummers from that era that were better and are better than him. Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benate and from the slower metal Mickey Dee and Scott Travis. All have better chops and groove are steadier and have more style. Of course this is my 2 cents.

eh.....i've played in front of 15,000 people before and not shit my pants. granted it's not 40,000 but at that point what's the difference. i would be too floored to be scared. lars ulrich sucks apparently.....that show was BAAAD can't believe they actually released it. although he sounded good on the records (the ones before PT's) and that's cool.

i agree with the statement that there are TONS of drummers who FADE Lars. I know plenty of them!

Grumble...I am merely saying he was influential. i am not saying Lars is the best by any means. He played in a great band...made amazing music...and played pretty damned well. Are there other metal drummers with more chops? Sure...he isn't even in the virtuoso team picture. Neither was Keith Richards...Ringo...Townsend...Rudd...Philthy Animal...etc. I am not sure why everyone likes to rip on him...I didnt think his playing was that bad...and the music KILLED.

As far as other drummers who 'fade' Lars...well...I assume that means 'SMOKE' him. Yes...there are...but none of us has recorded a Master of Puppets. Give the guy a little credit is all I am saying...

Dude...
Lets not get carried away. Please stop what you are doing...and go put on "Creeping Death"..."One"..."Master of Puppets"...

If you can tear him down that badly after listening to those songs...well...he must have run over your family cat. Music is definitely personal taste...and I can't tell you what sounds good to your ears...but that is an extreme slam (worst ever). Why the hate? Give me an insight into the stuff you think is great...and the drummers that impress you. This might shed some light on it...

Or it could be my other theory...I think a lot of people are jealous of Lars cuz they think to themselves "I can play better than that"...and they forget that it isn't just about the chops. People tear down Jimmy Page the same way "sloppiest guitarist ever...terrible technique". Are you kidding me? It is about the music...the songs...and what your band sounds like...otherwise, you should just go hang out at the Guitar Center "Drum Off" competitions.

Peace
