Thread Starter | New Wave Drum Kit recommendation please...
Hi i'm looking at setting up a kit in the studio and looking for recommendations. Budget $1000 + a little. Music wise things like LCD soundsystem and New Wave/Slightly disco orientated music is our goal. Obviously the recording process is key here but can you suggest a good kit to get us in the ball park? thanks |

Any decent kit should be able to work for that kind of thing - there's nothing particularly special about the drum sounds (maybe a little on the dead side, which a little moongel will do for 6 bucks). For the best sub 1k kit, head over to drumforum.org and ask those guys - probably something like a PDP MX series, Mapex Pro-M, Sonor Force series, Yamaha tour custom, etc.... or even better, pick something up used and save a ton. Remember to save cash for cymbals - those can run you more than drums. |

If I wanted my drums to sound like LCD Soundsystem or related music, I'd be looking at drum sample libraries. Their drums sound canned to me. I'm sure you could even pick a "new wave" library that would contain the most popular sounds used in the genre. |

I'm keeping away from electronic drums and sample libraries, just trying to get a live element in , even if its only recording top kit. the moongels are a good idea, as the sound is very short and damped. Anymore kit suggestions?

In that case (no electronic crap), the first thing is - you might want to be sure your recording room won't acoustically interfere with capturing the drum sounds you're after. Comb filtering (among other issues) is a bitch of a problem for getting clean drum sounds. What's your room treatment like? You're gonna want it fairly dead if you're expecting to get dry, thick, non-ambient but detailed sounds to start with. But, I'll ask: Are you aware that the LCD 'drum sound' is largely sample based? |

Hi Jax i'm lucky to have a dead room (and a live one) so i think the recording environment is ok. i realise LCD use samples now, i think its more that crisp tight snare, disco kick, joy division hats etc etc the sort of sounds which really were around 79/80. just a stylistic choice really. like someone said on another thread there seems to be a crossover between the new wave and disco drum sound in a way. So with that in mind, would there be an era specific kit/setup that might have been a staple for the new wave? |

actually, the LCD drum sounds are absolutely NOT largely sampled based, I've talked to James about his setup...He plays the drums on most tracks and then there's this crazy process of chopping via recycle and sending into an akai s-series sample...and the studio kit is a vintage 57 gretsch kit if I remember correctly

and... to kevin I would say smaller hi-hats, thick snare, simmons, a synare, and warm pre's and compressors...then resample that
