Snare sound???

I have a OCDP vented 14x61/2 with a power stroke 3 batter head, and about 6 weeks ago i replaced it right before recording and ever since then i have been unable to get the same great sound out of the drum. Any tips or helpful hints to aid me in getting that solid crack out of the drum again. Now the drum is really ringy, ive been thinking of changing the head to a evan st dry, you think that would help.

Have you tried tuning the snare?

Are you sure you laid it down right? If you have it off-kilter when you start tightening the head is toast.

Be sure your bottom head is also in tune, and the snares are at the right tightness, etc. The interaction of the two heads is important, that can ring or dampen depending on what you want, if you can control it.

Tuning drums is a difficult thing to master!

Some people change snare heads every couple hours when tracking, which I think is way overkill, but changing your snare head every 50 hours of play time isn't overkill.

At least you EVER got a good recording sound out of it. I paid $1000 for an OCDP vented snar and it was the most god-awful sounding drum I've ever played. I know how to tune drums and I could never get a good sound of it and ended up trading it for a ride cymbal and took a $750 loss. What a load of crap!

I don't know what to tell you other than to get rid of it and use a non-vented drum for recording. Go with a brass snare.

Actually, I'm just bitter. You probably have a great drum. I just got screwed and can't get over it.

Good luck.

Well actually we ended up not using the ocdp on the session b/c it didnt have that crack i really wanted, and this is the first time in 2 and half years that this snare has not met my expectations. I also have a yamaha brass snare drum that does well, we didnt use this drum on the session either i didnt even bring it with me.

yes that snare drum was nice, it was the studios snare and all it need was a little moon gel to get rid of the ring and blam-o

what WAS on the snare before you put a powerstroke on it? if memory serves, that's a heavy head..

Try a Remo Emperor-X (which is also a little heavy, but I like em).. or something lighter like a coated ambassador.

You have every right to be bitter, OCDP are grossly overpriced, renowned for poor finish quality and generally just an outright rip-off.
