Bedroom Drum Recording tips wanted

What are some tips you guys have for getting the most out of recording a drumset in my bedroom? I have pretty nice mics and preamps as well. I have 2 matresses at my disposal. Any help would rock. The room is about 15 feet long, 13 feet wide, with 9+ foot ceilings. Any particular placement of the drums and matresses that would potentially work? Thanks- Ian

You have a pretty nice size room. I would move the kit around just to see where it sounds best before treating the room acoustically. You want some of that room sound to factor into the overall sound of the kit. You really don't want a completely dead room to record drums in.

IMO a lot depends on the style you are going for.

Bedroom to me suggests a bed and bedroom furniture! So you may have to move things round in order for you to hear where the drums sound best in the room. Also the nine foot ceiling will help with getting a good sound out of your overheads.

A few questions for you....

what size sticks and drums and what styles of music will you be playing?

Also exactly what mics have you got?

Peace.

alrighty

They are nice new bi Ludwig drums with pretty beefy sticks. I'll be recording them with beyer mc930s, a rode nt2000, a 57, and a sennheiser e906 on kick (works well actually). A pacifica, and a Sebatron vmp4000. I also have some AT small Diaphragms at my disposal.

Recorderman with the mc930s, e906 inside kick, nt2000 fok, 57 snare top and sdc at's under snare and possibley on the ride if you need more ride!

But then again I don't know how many drums or the positioning of your cymbals.

Also Glyn Johns technique might be worth a try.

If the cymbals are dominatiing the sound then apply a bit of gaffa to the underside and see if that helps.

I like kick tunnels and lava lamps!

Peace,

get to know that "natural slapback" sound and mic as close as you need to so that you can avoid that sound. I hope you like your drums crispy
