Thread Starter | good Hats for rock?
I've got 3 sets of hats, and I'm looking to add another. The two 14" sets - K custom dark and Paiste traditional signature, lack enough stick defintion and sizzle for some of the heavier rock that I play. I love them for other music, but they don't do what I want for heavier stuff. The third hats are UFIP 13", rather bright and cutting, but not washy and full. I also have a 14" A custom projection top and hate it, and some old 12" bop hats from the 50's (which are great for certain things).
I haven't bought or tried other hats for quite awhile. Any recommendations? 15's would be ok and I'd spend up to $500.

I've got a pair of 14" K Custom Dark hats and they sound very good but I recently got a pair of 14" Constantinople hats and they're easily the best sounding hats I've heard over the past 15 years of playing.
They're bright without ever being bright, produce excellent stick definition with a very "controlled" sound whether it be half open sloshy or fully closed. Great balance of definition, volume and clarity of notes (even from footed hat too which I've never felt before). I'm extremely impressed with them and now I don't feel any need for other hi-hats in the studio. Most importantly, they record beautifully and cover most styles of music.
Looking for a ride to match now?

Stick definition? Paiste Rude Soundedge. But they're hard to make bark.
A little less brash, and a nicer open sound? Paiste 2002 or Dimensions Soundedge.

I have a set of Paiste Signature "Power Hats" (power somethin' anyhow).
They chirp like nothing else.

Paiste Rude! I had an 18" Rude crash/ride back in the day that was a gongy, trashy and brittle beast, but alot of fun to bash on. Worth a try, but I'd be worried about cracking them. They seem like they might work with some of the heavy guitar laden music I play.
I'll try them and the other Paistes mentioned. Thanks for the ideas!

I had great fun replacing a K HH top with a 14" A crash.
Much more topend, stick and wash.
Make sure to try different combinations of the stuff you got allready.

Or just some basic A Zildjian 14" hi-hats from the 60's or 70's.
I own some very expensive hi-hats (new and vintage), but my $100 old A's I got off Ebay win most shoot outs. I'm not sure if they are specifically 'New Beats' or not. I'm pretty sure they date from the 70's though.
Lot's of people seem to like the new Armand 14" hats too.

Really, I love mine. They are a real contrast to the K's and really different from the new beats. YMMV.
FWIW, my next hihat purchase is going to be a pair of 14" A Mastersound's.

I too have many hats...too many to even remember unless I open up my inventory spreadsheet. Yeah, it's that bad.
My favs for loud rock....probably my favs overall, but the worst possible name of all time. The Istanbul Funky Rock 14" hats. A close second is my old 14" Paiste 602 hats. I really dig my 13" K pair, but they're too small for loud rock...which is about all I play these days.
later,
m

i don't like the A Custom Mastersounds at all. too bright and tinny for me. but i like the "regular" A Mastersounds a whole lot.

No Doubt-----14" New Beats! Terry Date style. Super crisp, light and not heavy(or vice versa) for the dynamic-ness of it all. For me it does depend on how thay are mic'd and then played. Rock, my go to!!!

Yeah, the sticks aren't the problem. I've used a few different models/makes (747, 5A, 5B, HD9, 3A... Vic Firth, Promark), nylon and wood tip since I've had these hats. They just don't do the heavy rock thing.
I'll be trying New Beats soon. For $100, there was a pair from the early 80's on craigslist recently, but I didn't have time to check them out.
And to Nutmeg - I've tried probably every combination of the hats I do have, even with the 12" over and under all of the 14"s. My reaction - where's the rock? ? ?

maybe you should try a pair of 13" K/Z hats. (K top, Dyno beat bottom, I think)
I use these with my heavy rock band, and there is no mistaking where the rock is. They are loud, though. Makes recording interesting.
I like them a LOT for live use. They really cut through. For recording, I'd rather use the New Beats or the aforementioned Armand series.
Oh yeah, for sticks, the Vic Firth Danny Carey sig. model sticks are the shiznit.

New Beats here for rock. They are generally low in pitch though so if you really want the sizzle swap the top one out for something else.

If you can find a pair that is..

You reminded me of something I have tried so hard to forget.
About a year ago there was a set of 70's New Beats on ebay that I watched for days. I watched them for the last hour, and two minutes before the end of the freaking bidding, my internet connection failed and took ten minutes to get back, and the hats had sold for $112!!!
I sh*t on $112!!! I would've paid $150. I was (and am again) so pissed.
Just thought I'd vent.
If you find some, make sure you have a reliable freaking internet connection.

I just picked up a set of 70's new beats for a reasonable price off ebay - sound great (they will be going with my soon-to-be-here Premier Signia maples)..
The new Armand hats are designed to sound a lot like the 70s new beats.. a little darker and mellower than the current new beats, probably good to record.
Mastersounds - I like.. but they're LOUD!

| I've always played 14" New Beats until recently. I felt I needed a change and went in to a major drum store and tried about 15 different pairs from Zilj, Paiste and Sabian. I ended up buying a pair of 15" New Beats and absolutely love em. The great thing about New Beats is that they work for every style of music. You can go from Dave Grohl to Art Blakey. |

The Meinl's sound very cool! I might have to pick up a pair. My impression from the clip is they will work for many styles, and are probably the most versatile pair of cymbals I've seen. Impressive! It didn't hurt that Benny Greb is one hell of a drummer.
It doesn't sound like they'd be best suited for heavy rock, but they sound great for many other styles.
Thanks for the head's up! thumbsup

Yeah, I think they sound cool, too. Plus the versatility. Also, one could combine the 12" top with any of what you already have or one of your 14" (or smaller) hats with the 14 Meinl trashy/china bottom. Gotta love options! I wish I had someplace local where I could try them.

Had to post on the hats thread here....
I just found a killer pair of old Zildjian Istanbul K 14" hats today. They're very dark and washy, but just might become my favs. Haven't had a chance to do much more than put them up and play for about 2 minutes, but they're sounding really cool so far.
