New Ludwig Legacy Drums

Anyone spent time with these yet? Opinions?
From their web site, “…shells are made from thin, 1/16˝ hand-selected inner and outer plies of premium-grade North American Maple and an 1/8˝ cross-laminated North American Poplar core ply. This basic formula is then augmented by 1/4˝ maple reinforcement hoops and rounded, “Class-Cut” vintage-style bearing edges.”
Ludwig-Musser :: Be LOUD. Be HEARD. Be SEEN.

This could be very exciting considering who great those older 3-ply drums can sound.

I did a little search and came up with prices and pics.
$3710 for the 22x18, 16x16, 14x14, 12x9, 10x8
$4300 for the 24x18, 18x16, 16x16, 13x10
I need to win the lottery and buy a warehouse to fill with kits!

A good look at the shells.

I played the actual kit in the picture.
considering the shitty luddy heads, they sounded pretty good.
I would love to hear 'em with some better heads
still IMO, not the cool vibe of the old ones though.
part of the old 3 ply vibe is the imperfections of the shells.
these are "perfect" new versions of the old shells, which kinda doesn't work for me.
they also seem a bit heavier than the old ones.
Also..really limited finishes,etc is kinda half-assed.
Waaaay overpriced IMO.
Makes me extremely grateful to have a bunch of the old onesthumbsup

I can't fathom anyone spending that much on those new Ludwigs when clean to mint vintage 3-ply kits (the REAL SOUND) are available for about 1/3 the price.

I don't care if they do sound just as good as the old ones. Give me the old ones any day. I know what they're trying to do....about 20 years too late, but they're trying to cash in on the vintage market. Fender relic guitars...and most of the rest of the guitar makers are very successful at selling reissues of their older models. The reason they're so great is that the originals are sometimes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The only way most of us can afford them at current prices is to get a reissue. This isn't the case with drums...yet. Even though the prices have been going up drastically in the past few years, you can still get great vintage kits for $1000-2000 easily. A lot less if you dig around and know what to look for.

Anyway...love the thoughts Luddy, but if you can't price them equal to the regular line, then don't bother.

OH MAN!...Now that a re-ring if your gonna do it. ;-) I gotta hear these with a decent 2-ply head, ec2's or Emporers on em'.

I'll sell the DW's... and keep the Yamaha MCA's for that open tom sound.

Street price would still be around $2,800 im guessing for the 22" set up.

Yeah, I don't get it....priced way outta the market

Priced right I wouldn't mind having a New set to play gigs on. As it is, I'm a bit paranoid about gigging with my vintage Ludwigs.

Price should be 1/2 of what they want...at minimum.

Not to mention, a mint vintage kit would appreciate in value and still cost less!

Maybe they're pricing them like new technology...expensive at first, but 1/2 price within a year, like the iphone. No doubt they will have a few sales to people with no budget, very few. Once that's burnt, they'll need to lower the price.

New Ludwig Drums

My Ludwigs were sitting in boxes since decades. Just got my head around to restore sets for keeping the value. Browsing ebay for parts I hit the Accent series. Nice looks (though not the original one) and very reasonable for the Bonham re-issue.
Thought I am there – finally – and can achieve THE set for lau(german).
Well, in the shop there was the big disappointment. Yes they sound not too bad, but far away from Ludwig at all. Really weak punch from a 26" BD.
Checking out the marvelous Classic Legacy with those perfect shells there was the next disappointment. Perfect sound but no soul at all.
The dealer had a used SuperClassic from `81, a B/O Badge with 24" BD from around `79 and those new sets side by side – to convince younger customers of the great deal of the NEW Ludwig.
Bad idea! We were 5 drummers in store checking out various things and came together with the opinion the new ones are waaaaay too expensive and are missing the heart&soul of the classics.
Does anyone know the SONOR Signature kits – German craftsmanship at its best. They archieved not half the sound they were made for.
Like that.
Sorry Ludwig/Musser – keep prices realistic and you´ll be back in market.
Otherwise I ´ll go on browsing yard sales for the real thing.
Cheers

A couple of ludwig endorsers hang around at drumforum.org and have been RAVING about these drums. At least one of these guys has a rather massive collection of vintage ludwigs, and still can't say enough positive about them.

After playing/recording the legacy's a few times my feeling is the wood is really new almost wet sounding.they don't have the spring, bounce and feel of the old ones...it seems to me they might sound better with age..maybe dry em out a bit..who knows
I'm still perfectly happy with old 3 plys and WFL's

It might be right that the new Legacy will sound better with some age.
But I was talking about price compared to sound.
I am not going to spend 4500 Euros for a drumset that might sound right in a decade.
Some enthusiasts (me too) are prepared to spend that much money if they can get what they were looking for since decades.
When I was young I always wanted to order the Bonham setup in sparkling silver, but could never afford it.
Now I have the money but want to have the typical Ludwig sound coming with that kind of set as well.
And as an enthusiast I am not willing to swap to DW instead, which might be a wise decision having quality and sound in mind.

Looking at the new Ludwigs with heart and brains: its a great drumset but way too expensive. And someone who is creazy about the brand can´t get the sound the brand stands for. Similar to the old and new MiniCooper.
Someone who had the old one will never love the new one – although offering better quality and power.
