Thread Starter | what mic position for the room?
hi, I´m going to record a drumkit and I never recorded the room also. never the less I want to do this... can you give any advices of micing the set. are there any rules? or tricks. how far away should be the mics? how high above the floor? and how much distance between the mics? what type of mics would you prefer? thanx |

No real tricks...just walk around the room while the drummer is playing and pick a spot that sounds good. I love a good ribbon or two for the room, but LDC's work just fine as well. I typically like to squash the room mics to blend with the OH's and close mics, if any. But, I've gotten some decent recordings just using a few room mics by themselves. It all depends on the sounds/feel you're after. m |

Just check the mono mix to make sure there isn't too much phase cancellation.

i'm fond of putting a spaced pair of omni mics (ksm 141's) on the floor a few feet away. then i slide the tracks back (in VERY small amounts) while listening to the rest of the drums until i get that "albini" delayed ambiance effect. my band actually just recorded with albini last month. we kinda suck and he made us sound decent. coolest experience of my life. here is some stuff i did that way. www.myspace.com/segwaycops good luck
