New Virtual Drums - This Might Get Very Interesting

MIXOSAURUS | Expert Virtual Drums for DAW Music Production | Berlin, Germany

Comes on it's own hard drive (122 GB in size).

Listened to the "Jazzy" demo and am fairly impressed. In general I hate the Kontakt interface but heck this thing is interesting so far.

"Hard Rock" demo kicks ass!! thumbsup

The drums sound okay, I'm still rolling on Andy Johns.

I like the Kontakt interface, I'm glad East West uses it.

They give you individual tracks so you can mix them yourself. I downloaded and squashed the heck out of them. Didn't love all the tracks once I heard them individually but oh well still pretty interesting to me.

Hi,

thanks for discussing this.

ASAP, the MIXOSAURUS DAW Drums manual will be available for download as well as a collection of video tutorials showing MIXOSAURUS' controls in action. My rough estimate is that the manual could be online in about a week, the videos will take longer...probably 1st week of July.

Jake,

regarding the size - well obviously I would've liked it to be smaller. Truly. Sending a few DVDs around the globe sounds easier and cheaper than a pre-installed harddrive. Unfortunately, a multitracked drumset is a demanding instrument. Great dynamics, great diversity, lots of possible articulations, lots of human deviations - and all this multitracked.

What I've done is record a drumset using 20 mic tracks, convert using 24bits, wait patiently for each sound to fade, include all those articulations that a drummer might use (without getting too esoteric), record as many velocity layers as I felt appropriate (which is 20 btw), include as many HiHat foot pressure levels as I felt appropriate (which is 7 btw) - and record each hit 7 times for alternating playback (you guessed it - that's what I feel is appropriate to allow for even the "stiffest" groove to sound human, or to allow fast Snare and Tom fills to sound cool).
If you do this and decide to NOT use any bit reduction or other trickery, or to limit the available articulations too much, then you'll likely end up with 122 GB.

Best regards from Berlin, Germany

Why do I get a "401 Authorization Required" when trying to go to http://www.mixosaurus.com ?

Something pointing to the wrong place, or did I just try at a bad time?

Hi Lematrix,

thanks for the kind words!

The good news is that you'll probably be the frst one to receive your copy as you're living in Berlin. The bad news is that MIXOSAURUS DAW Drums Kit A will only be released in the first days of July, not now.

If you're indeed interested, make sure you register for the PreLaunch offer as this will save you 70,- EUR. No advance payment involved, no obligation to actually place an order after July 1st. See the STORE page on MIXOSAURUS.com.

Thanks again,
best regards

Hi Slaves666,

well, the MIXOSAURUS harddisk is designed to be fast enough to do all that streaming from and to provide a fast installation (because the audio data doesn't have to be moved) - however you don't have to use it this way. It's a drive that you can use for anything else as well, thus you might move all MIXOSAURUS data to one of your internal drives and put some of the stuff currently on your internals there (as long as that's not something you'd access regularly).
You can move the "library installation path" from within the KontaktPlayer2 plugin so that the plugin finds all the content.

This would defeat the "speedy installation" purpose, but would allow to work with other realtime-access FW800 gear.

BTW, the drive comes with FW400 and USB interfaces as well. They're not fast enough to stream from but might be fast enough for other purposes...

Best regards,

MIXOSAURUS

The web demo sounds great! The price because of the hard drive costs gets pretty high though. Could keep your potential clients away unless you have a lot of different kits and diverse sounds.

Hello everybody,

it's been a long, busy time, but finally MIXOSAURUS DAW Drums Kit A is now available through the online store of MIXOSAURUS.com.

Since the last posting the page has been updated with many videos. Here's an audio example of two of the included grooves that shows off MIXOSAURUS' incredible dynamics. This has been rough-mixed using some EQ and compression. As usual, the reverb is Kit A's own Teldex Room track.

Thanks for reading, and best regards from Berlin.

This is realy an amazing sounding drum.
Not two month ago I just switched over to EZ-drummer.
Because of it's sound and functionality.
But this is such a total different quality.

I visit their swebite but could not find the recording software it is compatible with.
There are system requirements but I do want to know if it works with my Logic 7.2 or anyone else his protools or q-base.

Keep us posted

Interesting. Although this isn't the first thing I've heard of that ships on a hard drive, it is reminding me of the "good 'ol days" (only a few years ago!) when you would usually be paying for HARDWARE containing sounds to GET sounds. And it still could be a nice feeling to have a dedicated sound unit, rather than having the usual crammed/multi-purpose hard-drives we use.

Okay..Nice sounding library.. Bu today with XLNaudio Addictive Drums awesome layout and graphics as well as sound qulaity, it would be very hard to go back to a standard Kontact player GUI..

I don;t know if you could address the GUI issue or not, but it needs an facelift..

I use the demo version of XLN for a couple of weeks and I don't like it at all.
Yes, the effect possebilities are good and nice in graphics.
There are several things I don't like in XLN ( sounds muddy, some sounds like a drum machine and not like a real drum )
If you like to mention a good compatitor then it must be the Steve slate one.
But off course it's a matter of taste

Yes taste and style of msuic.. I need a more flexible drum kit that can cover R&B, FUNK, GOSPEL, ROCK... Not just a one trick Pony..

I think XLN nailed it..

Here's a piece (< link) I did with MIXOSAURUS 'Kit A' Drums ('Standard Kit'), primarily conceived as an illustrative demo, but hopefully with some abstract musical interest as well.

It's recorded with the 'stereo out'-version of the MXS 'Standard Kit' — MXS also has multi-channel version of all its kits — and there's no extra processing whatsoever, apart from some very subtle dynamics control (EMI/Chandler TG12416 and Sonnox Limiter) and a hint of EQ at Logic's master output (the Sonalksis DQ1 taming the 200hz-300hz range a bit). In other words, this is more or less how MXS sounds out-of-the-box — well, one if its kits, at least. The reverb is part of the MXS-package as well and, believe me, you couldn't wish for a nicer sounding drum reverb than the included TELDEX Chamber Reverb. Magic, I think.

Also, as MXS doesn't include any sampled phrases, rolls, fills or whatever : *every* single hit in this piece was programmed — with only a keyboard and Logic's Matrix Editor — including the cymbal roll towards the end, which was created with MXS' dedicated 'roll building bricks'-samples (these rolls can be as long or as short as you want them to be and can have any dynamic envelope that you desire).
The solo hi-hat bit (somewhere in the middle of the piece) demonstrates one of MXS's more ingenious features: you can control the 'state' of the hi-hat (from completely, tightly shut to very loose and open) with the modulation wheel. Very, very impressive, I believe. (Also listen for the wonderful pitch-change in that hi-hat: it slightly and subtly raises as the hi-hat closes more tightly.)

Another spectacular asset of MXS is its stereo PZM-layer (an extra layer of samples for every instrument, heavily processed with high-end tube gear) which is described in the manual as the layer with which to add that 'expensive air' (and more width as well) to the drums and that is exactly what it does.

One technical thing that might be useful to know is the fact that I did this demo with the MXS-harddrive connected to a FW400 bus, even though FW800 is the recommended (and indeed more wise) choice. While FW400 won't allow you to use MXS to its fullest extent, it definitely allows for some serious work, as this demo testifies.

I haven't spent all that much time with MXS yet (just a couple of days, in fact) — which is also why I can't or won't make this a proper, full-blown review just yet — but even so, I already know that these are without a doubt the finest, richest, deepest and most glorious sounding sampled drums currently available. I own quite a few other highly acclaimed drum libraries as well, but MXS immediately shot to the nr. 1 spot in my list of favourite virtual drums.
The only thing — and this really is the *only* thing — that might be considered a drawback, is MXS's gigantic size, which inevitably makes for rather long loading times, but given the quality of what awaits you once the instruments are loaded, I think these long waits are entirely justified.

Once this piece was ready, I sent it to MIXOSAURUS along with the midi-data, and they kindly rendered it with three other MXS-kits. So here's the very same piece, but each time using a different MXS kit:

MXS 'Vintage Kit'
MXS 'Lite Kit'
MXS 'Hyped Standard Kit' (the 'Rosanna'-kit)

Thanks for listening!

Football,

Thanks!

MXS' kick can have as much or as little definition as you like, you know, depending on how you set the balance of the various mics - there's many, many possibilities there. I chose a fairly rough, open sound - even with a bit of a sloppy feel to it - because that's the type of kickdrum that I happen to like, especially in a piece like the one I posted.

MXS is a stunning and very versatile package, believe me.

Hi Re-peat,

this sounds great.

I liked a lot your programming, your kit and the vintage one.

What exactly is the vintage kit ?
If you or anyone from the Mixosaurus company can answer.

Thank you.

Regards.
