So, here's a story: the drummer whose hihats were driving me crazy when I started this thread set up here with Paiste 14" Dark Crisp hats. They completely took over the snare mic. The room mic sounded like a close mic on the hat.

He has a nice relationship with a good local drum store, and was to have come in last night with an alternate loaner set. He arrived last night with no loaner set, but instead switched from nylon tips to wood, altered his style and the problem was completely gone.
