you seem to know a lot about vintage drums, would you be able to tell me what kind of wood the drum is made of if I show you a picture of the inside of a tom? a friend lend me his rogers kit but we cant really define if its old or vintage...or worth rewrapping.

You're asking the right guy. Roundbadge even makes his own drums.

Hey, RB, how much was this Gretsch kit? Beautiful!!

I know Rogers pretty well. Just describe the badge and I'll tell you what it's made of. Rogers was one of the first to do solid maple back in the 70s. Previous to that, they were using Jasper and then Keller shells. Maple/Poplar/Maple...like the others, were probably what you've got though.

Send a pic....

The only badge there is, it's on the tom mount which looks like :
http://www.repercussions.org/rogss13.jpg

The kit though has a very ugly yellow finish TACKED to the shell.

I'll have a picture later promised!

This kit could be 60's, or 70's. (T-rods on the kick look 60's.)

We'll need to see inside the drums. (Holiday, Dayton, Cleveland, Fullerton..) Is the inside solid grey, or grey speckled?

BTW - Nice kit roundbadge!!

Rogers kit w/yellow tacked-on finish

Hi there all....

the yellow Rogers look perhaps (from the not-so-clear webcam shots) like perhaps some other brand, that just has a Rogers tom mount on it. I say this because from the webcam pics (again kinda hard to make out), the lugs don't really look like Rogers lugs. Plus, it looks like the wood grain runs vertically rather than around the shell, on the inside, strongly indicating Asian origin. Also, like the other post said, all older Rogers drums (except ones made for Buddy Rich or other rare exceptions) had grey paint on the inside, flat grey until around 1968 more or less, when they switched to grey speckled paint. Then around 1978 (more or less), flat grey again. Some time after that, the reinforcement rings went away and the maple was left to a clear finish (XP8 series).

Here is a slightly/moderatly faded gold sparkle kit from around 1969 that I have, sound guys have said (and I agree) that this is one of the warmest, punchiest drum kits they've ever heard. (But, hey, gear is gear. I'm sure there are many Yamaha kits, etc., that sound superb. The player/heads/tuning/TALENT is so much more important...but, putting it ALL together is always best). I'm such a genuis for saying that....wow.....whew.......

This is set up for a multitrack live recording I did....result was good and used to be posted on a band web site but we've since done a studio CD

sorry the pic is so big

All those Stax records of the early and mid sixties? Rogers drums from the Cleveland (or possibly Dayton) factory. (Al Jackson, Jr.) Fat, fat, fat, warm, punchy, tonal drums.

Gold sparkle Rogers sound file

This is from the same gig when the pic of the gold sparkle Rogers kit was taken that I posted a few posts up (the huge pic...sorry again for not making it smaller but what the heck, you can see it better).

Yeah, the maxi-pad D.B. muffler . . . the live sound guys (this club had them, believe it or not, so we piggy-backed off them to do the live recording---took channels off their board)...did that . . . maybe it helped...

A note on the recording...those are Beyer ribbon mics on the toms, they worked pretty well. I went through their board which was a good, brand-new board (forget the brand name)...straight into my Alesis HD-24. From there, when I did this mix, I was still using my Behringer digital mixer, so the mix was done there. Now I use Cubase so the mix would sound significantly better on that, just haven't had the time (will I ever? Who knows).

The "matching" snare on this kit is actually a ca. 1962 Rogers Luxor six-lug snare (mid-level model, the top-of-the-line had eight or ten lugs, otherwise it's the same pretty much, same shell) but for a six-lug, it really kicks a$$. Buddy Rich was a Rogers endorsee around this time and many think his drums sounded the best during this era. The shell on this drum is perfectly made (even though, yes, it probably has poplar ply in the middle...it still gives it that vintage vibe though).

Yeah, those definitely aren't rogers lugs. Also, it appears that the grain of the wood inside is running vertical. That's a dead giveaway, in most cases, of an import kit. Also, the only Rogers drums that didn't have reinforcement rings were the XP8 shells which were near the end of Rogers....they were Keller, all maple shells. The first on the market to be advertised as such. So, blame Rogers for all the "solid maple" hype out there.

It was pretty common for other drums to have Rogers hardware back in the day as their hardware was much better than the rest. Look no further than Ringo's Ludwigs, Ginger Baker's Ludwigs, or just about anyone else to see Rogers Swivo hardware holding the toms in place.

later,

I have a couple of Luxor snares....love them all. I think I've posted pics before, but my fav is my mint Red Onyx. I've got a little Tower kit (12/14/20) in the same finish that is so great looking....
I recently picked up a mint Big R kit with 14/16/18/22 that I love. It's my new favorite kit for playing live. I just need to track down a 24" kick and I'll be happy as a clam. It's the white finish, so i'm in good company with all the New York Punk bands from the late 70s as it seemed all played a white Rogers kit.

Also, Buddy did sound great during his Rogers era. One other tidbit. The Dynasonic snare was developed for Buddy. He continued to use one while playing for other drum companies. Hence the price of a real wooden Dyna...Last I checked, they were in the $2500-3000 range. Crazy.

later,

"Red Wing" sound file

Oh, on this Red Wing sound file I posted a few posts up....both the acoustic guitar AND the electric guitar were having some distortion problems, at the source, at that point in the gig....I'm not THAT bad at mixing. And this is a VERY quick, set-the-basic-levels and throw-in-what little compression/EQ/reverb sounds okay, evaluation mix kinda thing.

(which is a lot of what I do because I don't do this full-time, I'll be the first to admit. I certainly don't think the mix sounds all that great, just okay considering)

But, anway, somebody asked for a sound file of the gold sparkle Rogers drums, and there you have it, on the same day the photo was taken.....

Thanks!!

Thanks very much, Roundbadge...and after I posted I realized I shoulda said "Roundbadge asked for a clip" instead of "somebody" asked for a clip...just tired...overworked....undertalented...you know the drill.....

I wish I had (made) more time for this "stuff" (music..."art"....you know...)

I also dig Ludwig (and other more heavy) stainless drums, and Zickos acrylic drums....very cool sounding, they don't mess around

cool!

Seeing all those toms reminds me of that quote from Ringo about why he was inspired to play all those toms on Abbey Road. "Well, the boys bought me a new drum set, and it had a bunch of toms!"
