I have a sonar birch kit I haven't recorded in about 6 years. I was using a custom maple kit but no longer have access to it. I love coated ambassadors on my toms but for some reason they didn't sound right with the kit. I was missing the attack/punch/ volume. My edges are all redone but I ended up putting clear emperors on the toms for them to come to life. Is this normal? I am an ok drummer mainly a guitarist and engineer.

What edge profile is on the toms now? About 6 months ago I acquired a Birch Custom Absolute set and have been changing the toms out during sessions. I normally use the older Maple Customs (much thicker shells). This allows me to A/B the toms while controlling for other factors (the song, mics, preamps, room, etc). The MCs seem to provide a more pronounced attack, but the BCAs provide almost as much attack and the resonance seems to be more pronounced. These toms all have the same edge profile and the thinner (Absolute) are noticabley more resonant. Which says a lot because my MCs are VERY resonant. The clear Emperors are a great tom head though (and as classic as an Ambassador).

I've got Renaissance Ambassadors on my Sonorlite kit (and clear Diplomats underneath). They're better than the ol' coated Emperors/Ambassadors, and I really like them. The toms compliment the kick very nicely now.
