| Nice, I had a play on one of these last week and was charmed to say the least Do you have any preference between the keystone or the brown/olive badge one? Is there much of a sound difference at all? I didnt check which badge the one i played had. I actually bought a supraphonic last year thinkin i was gonna get that acrolite sound. I still love my supra though :) |

| 500 series nutjob | they sound similar but they have different heads and have not been tuned up as of yet. i am not a drummer ( i can keep a basic rhythm and thats about it ) so i will need to get some one in here to give me some lessons on tuning. any thoughts on heads? i was thinking about some remo powerstroke or i don't know?

Coated Ambassadors work - period. But a reverse-dot CS, or an Emporer, or an Evans HD will give you a bit more "thickness" to the impact of the sound which will also dry out the drum a little too. Acrolite's aren't particularly resonant - say, next to a bell-brass snare - so it's easy to make them sound "flat" quite quickly if you're not careful (which I know you will be...) Since I play mostly rimshots and hit reasonably hard, I cut a hole the size of a large coin in the snare-side head reinforced with tape around the hole. This vents the drum and prevents it from becoming "choked" on bigger hits. Since you have two drums, I'd suggest sticking a Coated Ambassador on one and a thicker two-ply (or reverse-dot) head on the other so you have two immediate options to work with. Of course, this will be tempered by the type of music you use them for, but coated single-ply and two-ply heads are a good place to start. FWIW, I've become less of an even-tension perfectly-matched snare drum tuning nazi over the years. I simply go round the drum and bring each lug up to pitch, play the drum, tune any inconsistent lugs up til most of the head has an even tension, and then detune one of the lugs. The snare-side head I tighten til it sounds good with the snares off, then tune the lugs either side of the snare strainer slightly higher than the rest of the lugs. I play with the tension on the strainer and I'm good to go. Nice choices, Pan - enjoy! Cheers to you, bdp

| i picked up a used DW collectors snare (5x13) a few weeks ago. haven't had a lot of time to play it (and have not yet recorded it), but it's got the exact sort of crack i've been looking for. it's insanely responsive and side-stick on it cuts through almost as well as a rimshot does. in short, it's a great complement to my 5x14 acrolyte, 6.5x14 pearl export and 5x14 ludwig gold sparkle (mid-60's keystone), and will probably become my primary recording snare. cheers, wade |
