Thread Starter | Bear Kevlar Heads
I have a Bear Kevlar "Concert" head on my 14" snare. Its the one with a relatively light coating on the Kevlar fibers. I bought this thing in Austin many years ago and I can't find a replacement... not that I need one, I just worry that I'm GOING to need another one some day.... Can these (or similar) be gotten still? Kevlar heads are widely used in marching band, but the Bear stuff is thinner, more for rock and roll, etc and needed less tensions. www.bearpercussion.com doesn't work any more. |

I have an Aquarian PH14 Powerhouse snare head that might be close to what your looking for. Kevlar, thin coating, power-dot center. New in the box. Will sell cheap.

I would just try to get a heavy single ply head to replace it. Avoid the Aquarian Hi Energy (which will fail on you under super tight tensions) 2 ply heads arent going to give you anything other than a HELLA ringy snare. For a 2 ply, evans g2s aren't horrible, but the Power Center Reverse dot heads are stellar for that tight snare sound. I try to avoid aquarian because they have a tendency to be inconsistent, I only meantion this because I had the wrap on a 600 dollar custom snare almost ruined because the collar was out of round (on a brand new head), than and I ripped through a Hi Energy (one of their thickest heads) after one day of practice and breaking in... In short: find yourself a nice thick single ply and you'll be on your way to snare nirvana.

what kind of snare is anyway man? you must have to have some gnarly hardware on that to keep tension on a kevlar head... |

Thats the thing about bear kevlar heads.. I THINK they're thinner than marching snare heads so they're good for standard snare drums. I'm just using them on standard snare drums... haven't tried it on my 8 lug acrolite yet, but have been using it on a 10 lug diecast rim snare.. hmmmmm |

so how do the kevlar heads behave? anything like a standard single ply or are they gated like marching snare heads? and are you cranking it down or leaving it slacked? because usually i keep my bell brass premier down pretty tight for live playing (because it shatters skulls that way) but I have been looking for a stronger alternative to my regular single plys... |

I can tune them all over the place, loose and soft and hard and cracky. I just got my acrolite, lemme put it on there and report back. |

I put the bear concert on my acrolite and tuned it way low, just to the point that there were no competing resonances. sounds really woody with no overtones. very very deep and nice threw the strainer on and loosened it a bit to get some snare rattle (you'd use this set up for a half-time, heavy slow song) sounded nice. im thinking of abandoning my 14x8 hunt temporarily... it was really cool. |
