Q for C.A.: Mark Knophler "Sailing..." vocal sound

One of the first thing I noticed on "Saling to.." was an incredible close - very midrange heavy vocal sound. Could you shed a light as to what mic / pre and processing was used?

1000000 % respect.
Lasso.

You got to love a great singer

On that album I used an AKG C 12 that Mark bought while we were tracking the last Dire Straits album "On Every Street". Malcolm Atkins at Air Studios in London found a pair for him that were originally from the BBC. We used a Neve 1073 module with the EQ out through a Tube Tech CL 1a compressor. I mixed the vocal using a GML 8900 compressor and a Avalon 2055 EQ if my memory serves me right. The song, Sailing To Philadelphia was mixed at the Town House studio on their SSL 9000 J where as the rest of the album was mixed at Air Studios on their custom Air Neve desk, with the exception of Sand Of Nevada which I mixed back in Nashville at my studio, BackStage at Sound Stage Studios, on our SSL 9000 J.
