| Gear Head | Question for Chuck
Hi Chuck. Thanks for doing this! I was wondering if when you are mixing in Nuendo, do you use an analog summing setup, or do you still go directly to tape? If it isn't part of your setup, I am still curious as to whether or not you have used a setup that did include a summing device and if so, what your thoughts were on it? Regards, SR

First off, for the most part, I still mix on a standard analog console, as much because of the ergonomics as for the sonic value. I believe that there is so much of my knowledge about analog compressors and equalizers that is tied up in the characteristics of modern and vintage gear, to ignore their use for the sake of the convenience and reset-ability of mixing in the box. I personally do not believe that when trying to mix a project that has lots of problem areas, that mixing in the box has enough power to deal with them. I therefore us a hybrid approach using plug-ins as well as analog inserts. It has been recommended that the Dangerous mix buss and the Chandler are interesting devices but there is some contention about their necessity and that we are considering setting up a methodology for testing the different workstations. |
