foam's a waste of time. Why not use rockwool or fibreglass??? Or check out 'Tontine Acoustisorb'... that's what I'll be making all my panels out of over Christmas. It's Australian made. It's a little more expensive than the 703 type materials but has all the acoustic benefits and is better to work with and healthier imo. |

I heard about the stuff on a great forum website that's purely about acoustics for recording studio's. It's an amazing site. Like Gearslutz but for acoustics. Go to www.johnlsayers.com and click on 'Recording Studio Design Forum' at the top of the page. It's a very active site, with people at all levels. The first thing you'll learn there is that Auralex and all those acoustic foam products are a complete waste of time, space and money!!! As to Real traps - they're great from what I've been told. They're not made from foam though, but rather a fiberglass type insulation. GIK acoustic panels have a great reputation as well! Check out their site at www.gikacoustics.com and click on the "Education" tab for a great information source on room treatment. The real traps site has loads of info as well. Anyways, the problem with those options (especailly for us Aussies) is the cost of buying those panels and having them sent over here. That's why a DIY job gets you amazing results for your money if you put a little effort in to do it right. The most important thing to start with is the right materials, and Tontine - being a healthy, comfortable, safe and easy material to work with - plus perfect for acoustics - will be my choice. That's my speil on acoustics anyways. It's all pretty basic info, but for someone just about to waste a thousand dollars on an Auralex foam pack (like I almost did), this is what they need to know! Cheers - Rez

thanks for that info! some DIY panels might be in order, instead of the above mentioned. |

Check out Ghost Acoustics under the heading Acoustic Solutions on the left hand side of our website - link below. The free standing gobos are fantastic. We recently turned a reverberant (an I mean nasty) box shaped room at Macqurie University into a decent space for recording voice overs. They are an off the shelf panel and very cost effective. They cost a bit more than foam - but unlike many foam products they work! No point in me talking about it - give me a call and I'll arrange an on site demo if you're interested - 0414 416 816 Check out DEQX on the site if you are serious about your control room - now that's some serious gear!

Awesome info here I'm going to go with the Fibreglass/Tontine absorbers. After researching the foam it just seems like a bit of a con, won't help my resonance problem much from what I can gather. Cheers |

I appreciate what you are saying, however ghost isn't foam. It's actually aluminium foil and fibreglass in a frame and covered by fabric. It's a very professionally manufactured version of what you are proposing to make. It's very cost effective and well worth looking at. |

Could you post the Sydney retailers you found for Acoustisorb? Also who seemed the most reasonable as far as price goes? Thanks
