If you are handy, I need help on hanging acoustic panels

I've been preparing my control room (in the basement) for the arrival of my acoustic panels, and I've been doing A LOT of measuring. The ceiling tiles will definitely not support the panels, and the floor joists directly on the other side of the ceiling tiles do not always fall where I need them to in order to anchor and position the panels correctly. What do you recommend? I figure there must be a trick to utilizing the nearest joist for support somehow and still position the panel where it needs to be. In fact, I may need to do the same thing with the wall studs for my corner acoustic panels since my walls are made of thin paneling.

Well you have paneling on the walls, but what are the walls themself made of?

Your ceiling tiles, are they the suspended commercial type?

Sometimes corner traps can be supported from the bottom, like a round metal base mic stand instead of hanging them. Hanging them horizontally on the ceiling corner can be a pain. I had to work in thru the side of the trap to secure it, was pretty tough.

I hope there is an easier way than I did it!! Some of mine are in bags, so I pushed drum lugs thru them with big washers on the other side, and used wire on S hooks.

Panels work better than foam on the low freq's. But personally i would put 3" Auralex foam on the ceiling. It does a great job on high and mid freq. control. They have the tack sticky or spray which will do a good job holding it up. On walls and corners, the panels and bass traps are the better way.

Think about 1' furring strips. Attach them to the whole ceiling and attach the pannels to them.

should support them well enough...

I have some ceiling panels hung from chains and S - hooks. It certainly looks nicer if the chains are symmetrical, but you have some leeway. You can have it hang directly from chains on the left side of the panel and the chains on the right could be swinging out a few feet to reach a joist. Small-link chains allow you to fine-tune it.

getting your panels to stand off the wall and ceiling a few inches is good anyway. I suppose it would depend on how low the ceiling is.

These are heavy wood framed GIK panels that MUST be anchored to the joists and wall studs. There is no way the wall paneling or the ceiling tiles would hold these things in place. Therefore, the only doable option so far is the answer given by joeq.

Anyone else have any ideas or experiences that would work for this type of room treatment?

Hey give me a call when you get a moment. I do not think you need to hang them from the joists, but want to go over a few things with you.

Thanks,
Glenn
