RealTraps introduces new line of acoustic panels emphasizing appearance.

New Milford, CT, USA--August 7, 2006--RealTraps has announced three new acoustic panels that will appeal to anyone who considers appearance as important as acoustic performance. Besides the new panels, RealTraps also announced that it is now including mounting hardware with all of its acoustic products. The new models are as follows:

The new Corner MondoTrap is similar to a standard MondoTrap at four inches deep but with beveled sides to nest attractively in a corner and appear only one inch deep. All other dimensions and properties are the same as a standard MondoTrap, the most capable bass trap available at any price. Price is $349.99.

The RealTraps Tri-Corner is a triangle shaped bass trap, also four inches thick, that fits perfectly in tri-corners where two walls meet the ceiling or floor. Like the Corner MondoTrap, the new Tri-Corner appears only one inch thick when installed, to intrude visually as little as possible while still retaining very high performance. At 32 inches on each side, it has a surface area large enough to tame even very low bass frequencies. Price is $249.99.

The new RFZ panel is meant specifically for first reflections, but at 32 by 42 inches by 2 inches thick, its size and shape are more appropriate than typical 2 by 4 foot panels. The larger size creates a deeper Reflection Free Zone, whether the panel is mounted to be taller or wider. The front surface is also beveled to look more like a picture frame than an acoustic panel. Price is $249.99.

All three new products are available in various colors, and they can be seen in the new Room Setup video on the company's web site: www.realtraps.com/videos.htm.

According to RealTraps co-owner Ethan Winer, "The appearance of acoustic treatment has always been an obstacle to their acceptance in home settings and even some high-end recording studios. These new panels are very attractive, yet still offer the extremely high performance RealTraps has become famous for. Previously, people had to choose between acoustic treatment that looks good or works well. Now everyone can have both."

RealTraps is owned by Ethan Winer and Doug Ferrara. Ethan is known throughout the industry for his many technical articles in audio and computer magazines, and he has engineered and produced several classical music CDs, including a recording of his own cello concerto. Doug is a professional musician and recording engineer who holds an advanced degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic and has been a systems engineer for Intel and Motorola.

The room in the lower photo is actually an audiophile 2-channel room, though the goals acoustically are identical for that and for a mastering suite. Not shown are another half-dozen traps in the rear corners and along the side walls.

To answer your question, it's not possible to have too much bass trapping. The more you have, the flatter and tighter the low end will be. I have 40 traps in my fairly large living room (25 by 16), and 37 in my home studio which is also fairly large (34 by 18 feet, 12 foot peaked ceiling). However, it's definitely possible to have too much absorption at mid and high frequencies. This is a huge feature of our traps - they have a semi-reflective membrane behind their front fabric. So you can put enough of them in the room to really get the low end right, but without absorbing too much at mid and high frequencies.

If you haven't been to our site, there's a lot of great advice there, as well as articles and videos that explain a lot of this in much more detail than I could possibly write in a forum post.

We have less expensive products. These new models are mainly aimed at high-end pros and audiophiles who are willing to pay a premium for a more attractive version. If it's any consolation, most of the 40 panels in my living room are MiniTraps, and only four are from this new product line.

thx a lot ethan

didn´t know about the membranes! sounds like a really good idea....
are they also working as a limp mass mebrane of some sort?? thus shifting the absorbtion-frequency of the traps lower?? or are they purely a "porous" (sp.??) absorber??

have spent a lot of time on your site and learnt a lot, thx very much, mate!!
I´m constantly testing, building & researching DIY-acoustic traps...and I was really amazed when I was in a studio here, fitted with RealTraps !!
looks like I still have a do experiment a litte more....

cheers tom

Hi ethan,
i downloaded the test tones from your website and wanted to measure my room response.
just curios, on the instructions you say to calibrate to spl meter to read 70db with pink noise, should all test tones read 70 in a "perfect" room?

Guy,

> should all test tones read 70 in a "perfect" room? <

I'd have to think about that! There's definitely an RMS relationship between the pink noise and sine waves, but I did not set the pink noise level for any sort of level matching as you describe. The intent was just to give people some sort of reference to get a decent signal level for the tones, but without blowing anything up.

You could determine the relationship by loading any of the sine wave files, and the pink noise file, into a DAW and see how closely they match when viewed as RMS. But really, that's the least of our concerns. If the sine waves alone played in the room are within a 10 dB window you'll be doing really well.
