Knauf vs. Manson vs. Smell vs. Other things

Hi all,

I've been building bass traps using the Knauf equivalent of Owens 703 (3lb) with the silver facing on it. (It is yellow rigid fiberglass board.)

I want to add some additional depth, so I went to buy some unfaced, but the place I got it no longer handles the Knauf, but only Manson.

They emailed me a spec sheet for the Manson and it looked similar to Owens and Knauff, so I went out and got a package of it.

When I got it home, and opened it, it smelled REALLY bad. The closest thing I could say is it smells like urine in old carpet. My Knauf doesn't smell at all.

Also - the knauf is really rigid and this is sort of floppy. This is yellow, also, but has sort of black splotches on the surface and the surface seems sort of "treated" (IE - it is like it has something slick on it.). The knauf is just really clean, yellow on the surface and doesn't have that sort of treatment / whatever it is.

There was nothing on the package of Manson that tells me that it matches the product that the spec sheet is for except it says: Manson M2367.

I *assume* it is what he gave me the spec sheet for, but is there any way I can tell for sure? The smell, the sheen, and the floppiness compared to my knauf makes me wonder. It seems (I haven't weighed it) reasonably the same weight for the same size sheet as the Knauf, but it seems looser and floppier.

Any idea about whether this will stop smelling? (I know people will probably say it will outgas and be ok, but this is really strong.) But - I'd like to know if anyone has had that started very smelly, but then actually became odor free. I really *can't* have odor in the house. Certainly not this odor.

Also - is it reasonable to assume that it really is the equivalent since it is floppier than my Knauf?

Thanks for any info. He said I can bring it back if I want, no problem, but then I am back at square 1 for finding a source for it. The guy at the place is extremely helpful and willing to work with me, so I'd like to throw him my business, but I need to make sure this will work fine for me (or not).

Thanks.

You can peel the FSK of the Knauf, if you need to and your supplier does not have any without FSK. But the faced panels are usually more expensive. I did use Knauf #3 as well, and it is a very rigid panel. Mine have been brown instead of yellow, but no smell as well.

In addition I used Knauf R30 (fluffy stuff) as well. Working with that I hated. It was breaking apart, produced a lot of dust, and was nasty to deal with. A lot nastier that OC R30.

Thanks for the info.

Yes - I realize you can peel the fsk, but since there is such a cost difference I figured I would buy some that was unfaced so I could have still more panels rather than "waste" the fsk on the nice knauf boards.

Thanks, too, for the info about the knauf fluffy stuff vs. the OC.

When I get back from traveling I'll have to finally decide and get the rest of these made.

Cheers!

Get a copy of the material safety data sheet (or whatever else you can find) and see what they say is in the Manson product. Could be the binder used to hold the material together is offgassing. check if formaldehyde is listed. I have no knowledge about this product-just what I'd check if it were me.
