Thread Starter | 12"x48"x4" Bass traps
I am gonna buy Owens Corning 703 24"x48"x2" Fiberglass Boards, and I was thinking in made one 12"x48"x4" from a 24"x48"x2" board, cutting in half the 24" and then put the 2 pieces together, my room is 11' X 13' (feet), should I build (4) 12"x48"x4" or (4)24"x48"x4")?

I'd definitely say go with the bigger panels. If you can afford the extra materials and you have space to hang them, no reason not to. You won't be in any danger of over dampening the room with the amount of panels you're proposing.

Somewhere there is an Ethan Winer article where he tested larger coverage area versus thicker panel thickness and overall coverage area seemed to provide the most bang for the buck. That said, if you've really got issues down low, you really need as much coverage area with as thick a panel as you can make. I do wonder though, if the option is between trapping 48" worth of corner length versus 96" worth of corner length, that covering more corner is better than just having bigger panels. Hmmm... BTW, I did make some 4x12x24" straddle panels in my own room. I made them to fit over doorways and doors in the rear of the room. They helped a little, but how much isn't clear since the front half of the room is much more significantly trapped overall.

shame on me for not just directing you to Ethan Winer's site in the first place... Read his info, it is very complete. Sent from my DROIDX using Gearslutz.com |

I have never tried 12" across the corner, but just from the testing I have done it would not be enough. Yes covering more area is more important bu the min you want, across the corner is 24" and the panel 4" thick.

Glenn, what about the idea of a 4x12" soffit type treatment in the corners using higher density mineral wool or OC703? Or do soffits made with these kinds of materials need to be thicker than 4" to be effective?

| Never tried a 12" soffit either. Ours are 17" which I think it needs to be that large get to the very lows. It might work though, but you would have to try it to see.

I was thinking to make soffit corners, with at least 22" across, fully filled with R30. And my room is even smaller than the OP's. Still I'm worrying that this may be not enough.

I did an 6x11x48" soffit box filled with SAFB in one of my corners and noted it had effect down to around 50Hz (+/- 2-3dB).

Thanks Glenn! OK, your design is 17"x17", which gives you a total of 34" of surface in the corner, and plenty thickness of fibers. All in all, the square corner bass trap design seem to be something that I should consider too.
