| Gear addict | Got a really good deal on 2" Roxul Rockboard 60
Now, not sure exactly where i'm going to use them (horse before the cart, I know). I have 14, 2" x 24" x 48" sheets. I definitely want a cloud (or two) above my drums in my live room (my unfinished basement). Since the ceiling is only 7', I'm going with 2" cloud and a 2" gap. How many clouds should I put over the drums? I was thinking one above the ride, the other above the hats (2 panels). I also have to do something about my horrible control room (well, my home office). I'll definitely need a few panels in there. Should I double up the sheets for each panel in there? The ceiling is also low, so I'd like do more 2" x 2" gapped clouds. |

If this has been covered, I apologize, but ideally, my cloud would completely "shadow" the entire kit, or are there specific areas that I should disperse the clouds to cover, i.e. hi-hats, ride and snare, with a gap between each panel? i.e.: [] [] [] covering problem areas, or better to be tight [][][] ? My main concern is the hi-hats sounding too loud and clangy (this has been exhausted in my "death by hi-hat" thread and yes, I'm working on my "studio" drumming techniques) and generally the cymbals having a harshness to them, that I believe is the product of a whole lot of concrete walls, brick, and ducting in my unfinished basement. I'm hopeful I have enough material, but I have so much treatment to do (including my "control room"), I'd like to get the most out of the fourteen 2x4x2" panels I have.

I would do it tight. Even 2 panels, enough to make a 4x4 cloud, is sufficient in many cases, just make sure it is set up so both overheads are under the cloud. A bigger cloud is often better, depending on how the rest of the room is treated. A cloud will help all the drum mics, but I'm personally a fan of recording an accurate drum sound using as few mics as possible (ie, Glyn Johns, Recorderman, etc) and a cloud REALLY helps with this technique, as does absorption on nearby walls, plenty of bass trapping in corners, and diffusion further away from the kit if there is budget for it.

) interesting... similarly if tracking a guitar cab? singing? is all tracking going to work best under the cloud at the mix, 'listener' position?I've not really got it clear how the land lies for a room expected to do both jobs..
