Treating a student TV studio

Any referrals for companies/products I should consider. I'm also trying to remember the name of these large absorption rolls for sound stages that I once saw.

Size? Budget? Paid labor or In-house? TV studios are dead spaces. All surfaces, except for the floor being wide range absorbers. Rose is a good refrence for doing it right. It is off my library page here.

Where are you? This is significant in recomemding suppliers, as exemplified by the examples below.

Australia: Bradford
Canada: Fibrex,Ottawa Fibre Inc., Roxul,
France: St. Gobain
Germany: Isover
UK: Rockwool
USA: Certainteed, Owens-Corning, Knauf

We're in the USA in South Dakota. It's a little media complex that will include studio and control. The work will be contracted out with some of us who are alumni probably doing stuff like pulling cable.

The answers are still evolving, but the thing is going to be roughly 40x50, square on 3 sides with a little angle on the forth. Here's the kicker: two of those sides are going to be glass to see out across campus and for people in the student union to see in. It's being constructed in the existing student union and the number they're throwing around is about $150,000 to build. One of the non-glass walls will also have glass between control room and studio. The other will have a lot of set in front of it.

We went down there today to talk to our old prof. I looks like we'll be able to get stuff up above the lighting grid, cover the control room wall except the window, and get big corner traps in AT LEAST two of the corners. I also mentioned GIK's art panels, which we could possibly incorporate into the set. The ceiling has about 2 feet between beams, and is already sprayed with something like Sona Spray. I figure we could fit a lot of 703 or 705 up there.

I've been trying to get them to pay attention to the issue of isolation as well. They're probably not worried enough about machine traffic outside and human traffic through the union. I've also been pushing them toward finding a builder with some experience in this sort of thing.

Well all that glass is going to complicate things big time..... good luck getting a dead room with that much glass - and that really is a key for TV studio production.

I also wish you lot's of luck with the budget you have - No way I could construct a room that size for that little money........ depending on the cost of union labor around there - double - perhaps triple

I know it's very far from ideal, but part of getting the funding hinges on people in the student union being able to see in. It's partially a show piece. It's kind of like have a studio with way too much reflection or don't have a studio. I see I neglected to mention that it will be used almost exclusively for news programs. A lot of morning show sets feature windows and they manage. Of course, I doubt they have near the ratio of glass to normal surface that we will.

On the bright side, labor and things are generally cheaper here in the middle of nowhere.
