Mic stand isolators and modes

Hey guys,

Does anyone have experience with auralex platfeet or primacoustic tripads for floating a mic stand? A guy at guitar center said they can help eliminate low end room modes in vocal recordings. I ask bc i have the mopads and they did a lot for my monitors?

You've been "Guitar Centered" by someone who does not know what they are talking about. Tripads and similar products are designed to physically isolate the microphone stand from vibrations that would be transmitted through the floor. If a mic stand is not isolated from the floor, sounds such as footsteps can travel from the floor up the mic stand and then be picked up by the microphone. This concept is similar to speakers sitting on your desk. Mopads are used to reduce the vibrations transmitted from the speakers into the surface of the desk and then re-radiating into the room.

I can't give any input as to how well these pads actually perform as isolators as I haven't tried them, but I can say they have no effect whatsoever on room modes, which is an altogether different concept.

refrain from purchasing foam / decoupling products without published mechanical properties.

you may wish to investigate sorbothane for your decoupling requirements. you will likely pay much less.
