How do the Auralex WaveLens's work?

How do they work? On what principle? I don't find the product description very informative:

Is it that in the second pic what would normally be the first reflection point on the ceiling is only visible from directly underneath and hence is not a reflection point between speakers and ears? That would make sense I suppose. But why would this make the room sound bigger? Because there is no wall reflection? (hmm, perhaps I am starting to answer my own question..). What about the other claims?

Quote:
The Auralex WaveLens scatters and redirects acoustical energy and can be an effective alternative to absorbing reflections. The WaveLens can be beneficial in numerous applications: creating a “large sound” in a small room, optimizing absorption panels by redirecting energy so that they are more efficient, or using the acoustical properties of an adjacent space to enhance your listening or recording environment.
cheers

Space Coupler

Matt,

There are a quite a few threads under "space coupler" that may address questions you have.

What I've taken away from them is the grid will redirect higher frequencies into (presumably) porous absorption. It can make a dramatic impact on waves that may otherwise glance off absorption at low angles. In addition, it seems to help break up lower frequency waves so that they are more easily absorbed with porous absorption. One argument against the use of the device is that the space and money eaten up by the coupler can be used to supplement the existing porous absorption. However, this view doesn't seem to take into account the benefit of high frequency absorption at grazing angles particularly when using porous absorption with a higher density and/or GFR.

Of course used independent of absorption, it can reduce flutter echo. When used in conjunction with other scattering devices, it can dramatically increase the results and possibly provide true diffusion.

Thanks John, perhaps you should write the product info for Auralex
