A chain in 20+ states carrying OC70X, Mineral Wool

Hello everyone!

While learning about bass trapping, I got curious to build my own and registered up on Gearslutz. After reading as much as I could, I decided to order some insulation online. Obviously, the prices were ludicrous, and I ended up paying about $70 for six 2" thick batts of Roxul's mineral wool. The very next day after ordering, I decided to look around locally for places that might sell it, and finally, I came across a place!

I called the Arizona location, talked to (what seemed to be) the shop boy, and he gave me some quick, non-exact quoting on tons of insulations, and was very happy to answer all my questions and was really cool. He also gave me their sales rep's e-mail, whom I emailed shortly after. Their sales rep was friendly and gave me some pretty good pricing.

Unfortunately, at their Arizona locations, they don't stock Roxul products (but they do at other locations) - So they suggested Thermafiber mineral wool batts. I can't find absorption coefficients for them, but the stuff looks identical. The 4" thick versions of the Thermafiber are 2.5pcf, whereas I believe the 2" thick versions are 4pcf, but I may be wrong. Please correct me if anyone finds out.

I still haven't actually placed an order with these guys yet, but they said they'd have no problem doing a small local order, and I could just come by to pick it up whenever.

I'm sure the prices will vary from state to state. Also, I don't want to hurt this company by stating their exact pricing online, and certain products will be cheaper during certain times I'm sure. In order to keep this helpful, informative, and hopefully not hurtful, I will give prices I was quoted to the nearest nickel.

How much?!
Rounded to the nearest nickel.

Owens Corning 703
1”=$.55/sq ft 12pcs/pkg-96sq ft
2”=$1.10/sq ft 6pcs/pkg-48sq ft
Owens Corning 705
1”=$1.00/sq ft 10pcs/pkg-80sq ft
2”=$2.00/sq ft 5pcs/pkg-40sq ft
Owens Corning 707
1”=$1.50/sq ft 49”x73” 42pcs/pkg-1043sq ft
2”=$2.95/sq ft 49”x73” 22pcs/pkg-546sq ft
Owens Corning SelectSound Acoustic Blanket
1”=$.75/sq ft 72”x70’ – 1 roll=420 sq ft
2”=$1.60/sq ft 72”x50’ – 1 roll=300 sq ft
Thermafiber SAFB
2”=$.40/sq ft 12pcs/bag-96sq ft
4” =$.85/sq ft 6pcs/bag-48sq ft (2.5pcf – may require extended lead-times)

Where?!

Make sure you get into contact with one of their sales reps to get exact pricing.

Good luck to everyone's builds. Hopefully this will be helpful to you all. I also made a duplicate thread in John Sayer's forum.

My way of saying thank you for all the wonderful tips I've read through; there still are some people like me in this world who really appreciate the time all of you put into these forums!

What the hell are you waiting for? Get it ordered, get 'em built!

Also, mods, if you want to put this in the more general "Studio building / acoustics" forum so more people could see it, it might be beneficial. I just figured this was the place where it made more sense.

LASTLY, there is another chain which was listed in John Sayer's forum which also might be very helpful to you. I don't know the pricing structure, but there's one in Arizona too - so I may be calling them as well. Check this thread for their contact info: John Sayers' Recording Studio Design Forum • View topic - found nationwide chain carrying 703

Thak you for the lead on LDI. Insulaton prices vary significantly in various regions depending material type and availability, market demand, manufacturing plant proximity and phases of the moon. The price differential you have for SAFB versus 703 is amazing. 4" of SAFB FOR LESS than 2" of 703.

Here is the Thermafiber SAFB Datasheet, including sound absorption data, from their website.

Exactly, thank you for echoing that too; take these prices with a grain of salt. They could vary greatly.

I'm very excited to have that great of a price on 4" thick mineral wool. Really hoping he didn't give me prices for 1" & 2" instead of 2" and 4" - I'll have to post here when I order it to make sure the prices are very solid

Also, +1 for the link for the coefficients. I actually HAVE found that before - I must have not saved the link. Thanks Andre!

That's cheap compared to other places I've checked. I thought the prices that Home Depot were offering me at $1.30/sqft for 2" 703 was pretty good, but the IDI pricing is more than 10% cheaper. Impressive. And the price on the SAFB stuff is even more impressive. I need to call their location in Tampa tomorrow!

Good luck. You should let us know "about" what prices you were told, I'm curious to see how the east coast differs in price.. I assume it to be more expensive in Florida.

I guess you'll be surprised... called IDI Tampa today and got the following (all I bothered to inquire about):

Owens Corning 703
1.5” = $.71/sqft, 16pcs/pkg - 128sqft (2'x4')
2” = $.97/sqft, 6pcs/pkg - 48sqft (2'x4') (by special order, 5-10 business days)
2"FRK = $1.30/sqft, 6pcs/pkg - 48sqft (2'x4')

Roxul Acoustical Fire Batts
2" = $.23/sqft, 15pcs/pkg - 81.25sqft (16.25"x48", 2.8pcf)

Thermafiber SAFB
3" = $.37/sqft, 8pcs/pkg - 64sqft (2'x4', 2.5pcf)
4” = $.80/sqft, 6pcs/pkg - 48sqft (2'x4', 2.5pcf)

As usual, stuff is generally cheaper in Florida.

Oh, awesome! Glad you were quoted good prices then. Roxul for $.23 / sqft is a wicked price, although just to point out to everyone: please make sure you note it is 16.25" NOT 24" wide!

So, you could just about cover an entire small room in 2" Roxul for less than $100.

Good news to everyone doing voice / video recording: You can now treat your room for insanely cheap prices.

That was just the stuff they had in stock (though I did ask about them ordering unfaced 2" 703). I suspect they could order the 24" wide Roxul and plenty of other stuff. They did say they can get stuff in from other warehouses in the state rather easily too, which might make getting stuff more quickly when not in stock. But unless you're in a real hurry, it may be worth waiting for these kinds of prices.

Perhaps this could be used as a "Post where you bought your insulation" thread..

Picked up insulation from IDI today...

1pkg of 16 sheets of 1.5"x24"x48" OC703 = $90.88 ($.71/sqft)
2pkg of 8 sheets of 3"x24"x48" Thermafiber SAFB = $47.36 ($.37/sqft)
Total with 7% tax = $147.91

Not bad methinks.

Nice one! You're gunna take pics during the build and post them up in a thread when you're finished, right?

Hadn't really planned on it. I suppose I'll post finished pics in this thread: REW analysis help... uh, so now what do I do?, but I don't think anyone wants to see my extremely mediocre carpentry or upholstery skills at work.

I just pretty much finished treating my room with the stuff I bought... gotta do a few more "poor man's" diffusors and it should be done. I will say that it has made a massive improvement. And while I got a good deal on the insulation, it still cost a bunch more than I anticipated for everything else.

Just posted pics here: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/7481472-post31.html

After reading this thread, I went out and found a local drywall supply store and found a gold mine!

ThermaFiber SAFB
6" - 16 X 4' (26.67 Sq/Ft P/Bag) $20.18 EACH BAG. Equals to $.76. Six inch thermafiber is fine with me, I never knew they made it that thick, I had to look for myself. The Salesman took me over to a huge warehouse, an area of nothing but ThermaFiber SAFB..,hence 2", 3", 4" , and 6" batts. My mouth dropped, lol.
I needed 160 Sq/Ft, payed $121.08 and that covered my entire Ceiling .

Beautiful! Glad you were inspired to DIY & buy materials from a local company. $.76/sqft is a remarkable price for 6" thick batts. Yes, they do make it quite thick - and 6" is a great thickness to use for panels. My current panels are 6" deep with Roxul mineral wool, similar to the Thermafiber, which I'll be grabbing some of myself pretty soon.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you located and what company did you contact? If you can help people in your area find a good priced local insulation supplier, I believe it would be in everyone's best interest!

Mason Drywall Supply

They have a bigger supply and warehouse storage than your local home depot or lowes as far as bulk and storage space. When I saw their warehouse storage, it was filled with All sizes of SAFB ThermaFiber! A second warehouse had Certainteed fiberglass insulation for residential and commercial use. They are probably the biggest supplier in the area. Again, I was very impressed and delighted to see those prices for ThermaFiber.
