Stopping Sound

I have a dorm room and I want to make it so I can be louder and the people in the hall won't hear as much of my music? What's the best cheapest product/way to do that?

Also my main concern is stoping voices, the bass is not a huge issue.

The only thing that will stop sound is mass, and mass only. So I can't really think of anything besides doing some serious remodeling.

Headphones are cheapest possible way to solve control room acoustics problems AND soundproofing.

So bass traps and broadband absorbers are useful for trapping or "sucking" sound out of a room, but not useful for stopping it from traveling out of the room? In terms of stopping sound, or sound proofing, many layers of drywall (mass) would be effective?

Very basically speaking, you are on the right track.

Bass traps and acoustic panels and diffusors, etc. will improve the sound quality inside the room.

To reduce the sound quantity from leaving the room you need completely different strategies, all of which involve construction. At the very least you will need to achieve more mass on all surfaces (starting with the weakest link and progressing from there) and make the room airtight (good luck with HVAC in a big building with lots of rooms).

If your music has a lot of bass you will also likely need to build a decoupled room-within-a-room 2-leaf system.

So yeah. Dorm room? Not much you can do besides rent another space for your music.
