Variable air-gap traps

Why do folks think about this? Building 5 panel traps now and would like to know if I should go with a variable or fixed air gap.

Either way would work fine. Just do what is easiest and looks the best. The point is to treat the room.

I see... so mounting them at angles or spacing them at different distances from the wall doesn't have any additional benefit?

Honestly I very quickly scanned your link but there is great success at it being fixed so I would just stick with what works.

Thanks guys. These are 4" traps made of 3PCF Knauf Ecose fiberboard (equivalent to OC703). It sounds like the best thing to do is mount them 4" off the wall.

One question that remains is this: these boards came laminated (similar to OC703FRK). Should I leave the laminate on the back of the bass trap or remove it? I am getting conflicting responses on this.

Dan from around here actually did it with the FRK to the back on a 4" panel spaced 4" and had good results. I, a number of years ago did a room where they had 2" panels with backing on the back, spaced 2" off the wall and found it not to work. Have no idea why his worked and mine did not, besides it being 4" and spaced 4". Bottom line, his worked, but if you want to play it safe then take it off and space it. That way has been done a lot of times and works.
Just to note though, you could leave it on and face it to the room. That will work as long as it is not in the early reflection area.

I'll play it safe and just peel it off... comes off easy enough.

Thanks Glenn!
