New Idea

So what would be the effects of putting a half cylinder of dense reflective material all around the room at ear level?

The result would be rather good diffusion and bass trapping. This is not a new idea, it has been applied rather effectively in the past. See acoustic books by F Alton Everest. I have something similar in the corners of my rooms. I use what we call here in New Zealand "hardboard" panels - it's much stronger than mdf, but cheaper than plywood. I support these with vertical lengths of aluminium right angle channel. I glued rubber trim along the edges of the panels, and they just sit into the channels and stay there. I fitted door handles to mine for easy man-handling them in and out. Some finger holes would probably suffice.

Randomize the size of these - because they have a resonant frequency. Sort of like a damped kick drum, so the panels themselves absorb bass frequencies.

The other way meaning concave? or meaning horizontal?

Concave would sound very bad. The sound would be 'focused' in a bunch of spots. Really crappy imaging and probably hard on your equilibrium.

Set up horizontally, you would redirect energy toward the ceiling and your floor, which could be good or bad. It would make your room sound larger, and probably less RT60.

I see you live in the Natti. I'm not too far from you.

Cheers,

Neil

I was talking about having the length of the cylinder run parallel to the floor. so you second explanation helped a lot.

I am actually in Springfield till get some money saved up (baby on the way) and can get back into school. I read your whole build of your studio a few months back and it is amazing looking! I would love to come see it sometime. I am a novice, have some cheap gear, no place to record, and I'm a gearslut... I have been reading on gearslutz every day for the past year (im only 24).

Next step?: Start posting questions left and right It's probably annoying for the people who have to answer them but you learn a freakin ton. That's how I did it. I've been a member on a different forum for about 7 months now, just passed 1000 posts. But I feel like I'm an expert on the topics there, cause I've asked every question I could think of. And now I can be helpful, not just a moochy sponge

Back on topic, if you end up making some of these cylinders, you might try mixing them up. I.e., some parallel with the floor, some perpendicular to the floor. That way, you end up scattering across a broader range. Not just up and down, not just side to side.

What kind of space are we talking about here? Tracking? Listening? Critical Listening?

Asking questions left and right is one thing, applying polys left and right is quite another....

Almost every question i have had regarding recording space i can find an somewhere on this site. So I usually do not post to much. Gear reviews are all subjective and I have no experience with most of the stuff. So I dont post to much. Yet i still feel very informed and knowledgeable on most topics discussed here. I have been trying to get my finger on the concepts of building outboard gear but i feel i just need to build a few and see first hand. I was in school for electrical engineering but had to stop just before we got into transistor and IC's so a huge chunk is missing. I have read and read and read watched videos on youtube (found a few really useful lecs). But I still cant put my finger on it.

haha. but back to the topic at hand. I was thinking in terms of a mix room but I can infer the results from one to the other. How does this affect the RT60?
