| Lives for gear | "Bean Bag Chair" (filled with insulation) as Bass Trap??
I've identified a few odd-shaped corners as bass trap candidates and I'm struggling with the best way to treat them. As you can see from the picture, the areas marked A and B aren't perfect right angles and I'm attempting to absorb frequencies between 40-70Hz. On aother thread, it was suggested that the best way to treat these frequencies is more than 12" of the pink fluffy insulation. So In all places that are simple and square, I'm planning to tread floor-to-ceiling with cloth-covered, wood-framed boxes of Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation that range in size from about 1x2x4ft to 2x2x4ft (stacked to 8ft high to cover floor-to-ceiling). But in location A and B, I have to choose to ditch my overstuffed goose-down couch (which may be doing some absorbing of its own, so I might have more area to treat if I remove it), create funny-shaped boxes for the lower half of the wall/corner... or my new inspiration: Buy cloth bean bag chair covers, fill them with Owens Corning EcoTouch, and jam them to the left and right of the couch on the floor filling the odd-shaped space. There are dozens of covers like this on Amazon. What say the experts?? |

I really see no reason that I would not work. The only thing that might concern me is when people sit on them and compress the fiberglass. It might change the way they work. I still think it is a good idea. Neil

Seriously tho, if you're looking for something sittable, try acoustic cotton batting rather than glass. It's a lot more comfortable. And be sure to make the outer shell something breathable... not vinyl or leather like some beanbags. -s |

Nice. But maybe I should flip my existing couch over, slit it open from the bottom, and fill it with fiberglass and seal it up again! Any thoughts?

Well the couch frame has solid sides so that's a no-go. If I were to build a bench like the one you linked to, is there a recommended minimum size for the front face of the base that's holding the insulation?

Perhaps you could build side tables for your couch. If you just made wood supports on the corners, and packed the whole inside with insulation, I think you could make some very effective traps. Since you are trying to suck out very low frequencies - this could work really well. Just an idea. You could also just pull your couch out a couple inches from the wall (and if your couch is actually sucking up some bass, this might make it even more effective...or less, who knows) and make floor-to-ceiling 6" deep traps behind the couch and to the sides of the couch on the other side of the angle. I'm sure you can see how corner traps are so effective - a 90 degree angle can cause some serious resonating, but I can't see a 135 degree wall being nearly as bad as a 90 degree. I'm no expert, but it makes sense. Perhaps another idea would be to make some standard bass traps, and just not have them go floor to ceiling. Mount them in the 135 degree corners above the couch, and just have the angle behind them in the middle, if that makes sense. I don't know. Just ideas. Pros can let you know whether any of these are actually good ideas.. Anyways, good luck man. |

Hmmm, giant "bean-bag chair". Sounds more like a recipe for a "Bassist Trap" rather than a "Bass Trap". Cheers Kris |

Ha! Well I use Trillian ;-) Very seriously considering the "bass trap bench" as an option for that wall, replacing the couch. |
