Thread Starter | soffit mounting - question for Glen @Gik
Hi, Hoping Glen can answer this one. I am building rockwool RW3 square soffits in my room similar to Glen's room design. They will be covered and glued using Cara acoustice fabric. The soffit will be 300mm square all around the top of the room and down the main corners floor to ceiling. Question is... will adhesive on the two sides that will be touching surfaces be sufficient to take the weight. Each ' piece' of soffit will be 300mmX 300mm X 1.2m long. I am trying to avoid running batton supports under the soffit and to the ceiling if possible. How are your soffits mounted on your designs Glen ? Any help is appreciated. Will post pics soon ! thanks Stu.

Not sure how you would do it but I would think the best way would be to build the frame into the corner, stuff it and then cover that with fabric.

Thanks for the reply Glenn. These soffit sections are heavier than I initially anticipated. Looks like another trip to the timber yard is needed. I will run framing around the ceiling and wall to ' trap' the sections in. Then staple the fabric to the batons. Thanks for the advice. regards |

Cool. I'm eager to see your pics. I'm considering the same approach. Have you taken any before and after measurements? Craig |

I didn't take any pre measurements as I have not ordered my ec beringher mic yet.. ( oops ) however I can remove all panels / reflection and clouds apart from the soffit, so will measure that, then with all treatment in place. ( not perfect I know to ascertain the differences with / without treatment ) Also there is an electric board and gas meter in the way of the vertical corner columns that impede the design abit, but hopefully won't cause too much of an issue. I am going for a pretty dead mix room as its only 3.3mX2.3mlongX2m high so theres a total of 20 cubic meters of treatment in the room at present. soffit is 300mX300m corner columns are also the same clap test suggests nice and tight sound - reflection free, but obviously doesn't indicate how the low end will be / perform. Cant wait to do the testing I have been studying the stickies in terms of which tests to run etc, so bear with me if the graphs etc need tweaking to show the optimum views of the room response. hopefully, I'm getting to the end of what's been a long journey ! also, wood floor is laid also on top of concrete with a layer of bubble protection between. also, I have a ' store cupboard' in the room that will house the computers, I will add more rw3 in there to 'eliminate' any noises and hope to have a really quiet space to mix and record. regards Stu. |

it sounds pretty tight Glen. I'm really pleased with it so far. Obviously its fairly dry sounding and the treatment seem to be really helping keep the low mid detail . Low end seems clear and pretty tight too. Room is working well for nice tight dry vox and gtr recordings too. however, It did take some adjusting after being used to working in a non treated room for so long. I'm not over fussed with all the acoustic measuring for now, I'm just happy to be mixing and recording in my treated room. Until now, I never realized how much I was missing by not having my room treated. I'm hearing things just listening to some of my fav artists, that I had never heard before, I can smell the room they recorded in ![]() Hope to get the vertical sofits finished this month. Will posts some pics once everything is complete. Thanks for the original design you posted, it really does make a difference to have people like yourself, that are willing to help others achieve their goals, and for that Glenn, I thank you. |
