Acoustic Panels-Plywood back necessary?

I'm making some acoustic panels for my ceiling, to block a sliding glass door, and some bass traps. I'm using bonded logic ultra touch cotton insulation.

Right now I'm making the panel frames. I noticed that some other instructions on the web call for the back of the panel to be plywood. Is this necessary? It would be a lot easier to just leave the back open or cover with cheap fabric.

You have a door on your ceiling?

If you are making broad band panels then the back should/can me open. You can space it off the surface to increase low end performance. If you are trying to make something tuned (I would caution you on this) then it does have to be sealed.

This might be more info than you need but I recently found this Acoustics 101...Practical guidelines for acoustic construction: building a sound studio, listening room, home theater room, and any other sound control room project.
