Thread Starter | Hanging sound clouds, 18ft ceilings
I'm hanging some nice custom built sound clouds (4") in my main recording space. The room has 18ft tall ceilings and I am thinking about hanging the panels about 4 inches from the ceiling. Thoughts? ![]() Sent from my DROIDX using Gearslutz.com App |

If you use (long) chains to hang your clouds you can easily vary the distance to the ceiling and then measure the room again and again while hanging the clouds higher and lower. You should then be able to find the distance with the optimal effect on the room's acoustics. After you got the optimal position you can cut off the overlapping parts of the chain or simply hide them above the cloud so you can easily access the top of the clouds in the future (repairs, cablework, etc). That's just an idea though, but hanging them on chains also makes the mounting process easier (imho). |

Have you made measurements of the space? Careful so you don’t kill it. With your ceiling height, you should definitely look into to use of diffusers. I would consider using broadband absorption only at walls that might be too close to the performers resulting in early, strong reflections.

We setup some great 2" panels on the walls to test reflection at that level, and the sound change was minimal. The panels definitely need to be hung from the ceiling. I have received counsel from multiple engineers to hang the panels about 4" from the ceiling. Some have suggested a pulley system to raise/lower as needed. I don't have the funds for that, but cool idea regardless! Thank you all for your feedback!

mounting the clouds in a way you're able to raise/lower them isn't expensive at all - you just need 2 or 3 people depending on the clouds' weight. You can even angle the cloud(s) as a whole, even when everything is supposed to be finished.. just get longer chains for the side. I did it this way:
