Best use of this foam for bass trapping and generally treating my room.

I was kindly donated a decent amount of 2.5" acoustic foam by a neighbour.

However, i have already treated my room for high/mid reflection points on the wall behind my speakers, back wall, side reflection points and ceiling with similar 2.5" material, nothing overboard, just enough that is appropriate for the room.

I havn't done too much research into bass traps, but after skim reading a fair bit of Ethan's guides when previously treating my room for high/mid absorption, i always had it in the back of my mind that i would make some bass traps from rockwool eventually. However this is probably going to be a project for the future, and seeing as i have this foam now I was hoping that I might be able to somehow make use of it for bass trapping? I have seen some debate on here re: foam bass traps, but i see that they are quite common in some places.

Has anyone done this kind of thing before with spare foam that they had lying around? Is it possible to "double it up" or set it in an enclosure similar to the d.i.y rockwool traps?

I've kind of had a few other projects on lately that have led me to neglect my acoustics, but i'm sure i have some problems in the low end to address and have been getting some rattles. I've done some basic sine wave sweeps with a synth and have found some problem area's in my room as such:

53 hz - 62 hz - door rattle
70hz - window rattle
144hz - 156hz - loud peak (?)

So what do you guys think, can I adress these issues what the materials i have?

thanks in advance,

If you have a vocal booth then i'd use it there....Or make 2 wooden frames with multiplex backing and glue the Foam init So you have a Screen for vocals or amp recording ?. Just giving ideas

Foam isn't realy usefull for low end as insulation is....

Thanks, no, no vocal booth. I do electronic stuff. Don't really record any vox/live instruments, so doesn't appeal. Synths and Drum machines pretty much. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Keep em coming please

Big

I doubt if there is any benefit in having thing foam behind the speakers. There should be no MF or HF back there and the foam will do nothing for LF.
If you roll it or stack it in corners it will work fine for LF trapping.
Look at the Mega Lenrds, tested at studiotips.com
Rolls of attic insulation, left in it bags, stacked in corners is also very effective. And warm! Play your sines again. Settle on a loud resonant one. Move throughout the room noting the peaks and nulls. Try another frequency. You will find that most if not all of them have huge peaks in the corners.
Thus, good place to trap them.

Speakers radiate energy backwards as well due to edge diffraction but how much depends on the speaker. This in one reason for flush mounting.

An RCF Mytho 6 is for instance 18 dB down at 150/210 degrees relative to direct at 3 kHz:

Correct but

Pretty leaky speaker!
In absolute terms Jens is correct, obviously. I am not sure if he is recommending leaving the foam there or not though.
Jens, would you leave the foam back there or deploy it elsewhere?
Many of us make the call to not treat behind the speakers due to the relatively low levels of HF back there. Also any bounce from the wall would of course be blocked by the speaker.
