Thread Starter | A quick question about insulation my loft....!
This could be a symptom of over thinking..... But since moving into my new house last year, on the to do list has been to insulate my loft - for heat retaining purposes that is!!!! There's 100 - 150mm standard loft roll up there already. I have got some rolls of 200mm top up insulation and I plan to lay this on top sometime soon. The room I'm converting to a control room is a spare first floor bedroom with standard plasterboard ceiling. I'm curious to know whether laying the loft roll in the loft on top of the existing insulation is likely to have any kind of impact on the LFs in the room? I'm so pushed for time at the moment (and with summer fast approaching) I was going to leave doing the loft until the autumn. BUT - if it will have a noticeable effect, I'll probably get it done sooner rather than later. Before I get knee deep in REW measurements I'm trying to think of some of these variables and getting them sorted before measuring the room, so that when i do measure it will be as accurate as possible and not subject to too much change. Cheers Max (PS - On that note....... I did post my initial measurements a few days back and have not followed up. Well, this is the reason. I'm also getting rid of my large desk (for a much smaller/angled one) and taking some furniture out/moving other bits around. This also means taking speakers of their current shelf and making some concrete block stands. Once all this is done and the room is closer to what it will be like when finished, I'll be back to the measurements. Just seems to make sense to me to get the room as close to how it will be in the future now) |

Not sure bout that but it deff' will help to keep the warmth in the room. To treat lower frequency,s you'll need to place Thick bass traps in your room in order to treat that.

Cheers for the reply. Warmth is something I will look forward to next winter. I've also re-arranged things so that I can use both radiators (last year I could only use one). So I should be nice and toasty next winter!!! Quote:
Indeed....I already have fairly large superchunks.... I have space for more bass trapping, but I've now hung around for long enough in these forums to learn that blind application of traps is not always the best way to go. So I'm trying to get my room as close to "finished" as possible (without the additional treatment) so I can measure - find out where/what my problems are - then apply further bass trapping accordingly. | |

I guess I was really asking whether thick fluffy mineral wool behind plasterboard works as a bass trap..... Because if it does, that's what I'd have in my ceiling in effect - the plasterboard ceiling behind which is some joists and a load of insulation. Loft insulation is cheap enough for me to layer it up really thick up there if it is likely to help with LFs. But then I've never heard people discuss this before and therefore wondered if my thinking is off..... Oh, and whilst I'm here - bump! |

Hi Max. Plasterboard on studs or a rafter frame does act as a bass absorber when it is damped a bit. Typically the frame and some insulation will damp it enough for it to not re-radiate. In your case, extra weight on top will damp it further and lower the resonant frequency. Short answer, no LF benefit likely. Longer answer, it depends on everything.... For thermal purposes the phenolic insulations are about three times more powerful, for a given thickness. No acoustic benefit though. DD |
