Thread Starter | Alright, so I've got an apartment . . .
. . . which I'm stuck doing mixes in. Setup is a simple Pro Tools 8 system into Alesis M1 Active monitors (the old ones). I'm looking to create the best listening/mixing environment that I can without (a.) doing anything I couldn't remove when the lease is up, and (b.) spending a lot of money (say, $300 tops, or I wouldn't be living in this dump in the first place). Here is my room: Room :: RoomLayout.jpg picture by NS3474 - Photobucket I apologize for the artwork. I'm a live sound engineer, not an architect. Here's what I've done so far: - Moved my monitors 1' away from the wall, put them on monitor stands, and put myself in the equilateral triangle, equidistant from side walls. - Put a 54"x13" piece of eggcrate foam (from some Midas parts that were shipped to our venue) on the back wall, horizontally, about 5' above the floor, directly above the couch. - Hung a wool blanket on a hook on the back of the door, just kinda draped there. The foam and the blanket effectively killed a really annoying flutter echo, but I realize that there's no real broadband absorption here. I've considered making bass traps, but the two corners on my left are a door and a window, and the whole left side of the room is recessed floor-to-ceiling shelving. I realize that my question is probably going to provoke a lot of responses like "get another room" or "remove a window" - and you'd probably be right. However, I've got to play with the cards I've been dealt . . . what do you suggest I do next? Thanks, guys and gals!
__________________ Wait, you wanted MORE vocals in the monitors? Aw, gee, I just assumed that when you threw our mic DOWN on the ground, that meant you wanted LESS in the monitor . . . Oh man, no wonder you guys sucked . . . |

Also, where would I put these? Do they need to be symmetrically placed? 2 of my 4 corners are not really usable (because of the door on one side and the window on the other). Thanks! | |

with cans i wasn't referring to the boys' room but headphones, a good pair might help tons instead of trying to control the acoustics of a room with limited resources... the reason why i recommend the GIK screen panels is you can use them in so many ways changing the acoustic space as you go along... just set them up in different spots in the room to figure out what sounds the best for you... good luck! |
